Catch a Classic!
Grab a seat (and prepare to be on the edge of it most of the time) for this five-film lineup of classic titles directed by “Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock. It kicks off with North by Northwest (1959), the fun thriller written by Oscar nominee Ernest Lehman that takes adman Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) on a chase across the country after he is mistaken for a spy by enemy agents James Mason and Martin Landau. Eva Marie Saint costars as a woman who may not be who she appears to be. After that is Strangers on a Train (1951), featuring Robert Walker in a funny yet terrifying performance as a psycho who wants to “trade murders” with the tennis pro (Farley Granger) he happens to bump into on the train. The lineup continues with one of Hitch’s British films, the mystery/thriller The Lady Vanishes (1938), led by Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave and May Whitty. Next is the drama Lifeboat (1944), which follows the survivors aboard the titular craft after their ship has been sunk by a German U-boat. Hitchcock earned a Best Director nomination here (perhaps for the clever way he manages to sneak one of his trademark cameos into this one-set drama alone). The day concludes with The Wrong Man (1956), whose title not only reflects its story but also the themes in a number of other Hitchcock films, as well. This one is perhaps one of the most suspenseful since it’s based on an actual case where an innocent man (played by Henry Fonda) was arrested and charged after being mistaken for an armed robber. Sterling Relyea Walter, better known as actor Sterling Hayden, is celebrated with 14 films during today’s Summer Under the Stars lineup. Among the highlights will be several of the films noir and Westerns in which Hayden specialized during his heyday, including The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Best Director Oscar nominee John Huston’s heist classic that also stars Best Supporting Actor nominee Sam Jaffe, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, James Whitmore and Marilyn Monroe in an early role; another terrific heist thriller, The Killing (1956), directed by Stanley Kubrick; the film noir Crime Wave (1953); and Westerns such as Kansas Pacific (1953) and Arrow in the Dust (1954). Hayden’s commanding performances in other genres are on display as well, including in Zero Hour! (1957), a deadly serious airplane-in-distress drama that served as a major inspiration for the later comedy Airplane!; Best Director nominee Kubrick’s Best Picture-nominated dark comedy/political satire Dr. Strangelove (1964), featuring Hayden in one of his most famous roles, as Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper; Carol for Another Christmas (1964), an Emmy-nominated TV production from writer Rod Serling that features Hayden as a Scrooge-like character in an updating of A Christmas Carol; and Winter Kills (1979), one of Hayden’s last few films, another satirical dark political comedy, this one featuring Hayden as part of an all-star cast also including Jeff Bridges, John Huston, Anthony Perkins, Eli Wallach, Dorothy Malone, Elizabeth Taylor and more.
