31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes to Paris
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

Fittingly, TCM spends all Valentine’s Day with Oscar-winning and -nominated films set in La Ville de l’Amour (the City of Love): Paris. Some of the movies you won’t want to miss are 1942’s Casablanca (“We’ll always have Paris.”); Gigi (1958), with Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier and Leslie Caron; and 1951’s An American in Paris, with Caron and Gene Kelly. The 17-minute closing ballet, featuring the dance pair and set to George Gershwin’s symphonic poem of the same title, is as nuanced as it is colorful, and has influenced countless other artistic film passages, including the fantasy sequence of 2016’s La La Land. Also worth tuning in for is the Baz Luhrmann-directed musical Moulin Rouge! (2001), starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor as lovers ostensibly occupying the bohemian Montmartre neighborhood in 1899, but really existing in a fluid, era-bending nightclub setting. Plus, enjoy another notable 2001 offering set in modern-day Montmartre, the TCM premiere of Amélie, starring Audrey Tautou (The Da Vinci Code).

Catch a Classic!

Some of Oscar’s most frequent recognitions go to films portraying the very worst of human nature, and today, TCM allows you to settle in and live vicariously through others’ bad behavior. Some highlights in this best of the best in the crime genre include 1944’s Double Indemnity, with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, the granddaddy of all double-crossing tales. Two Alfred Hitchcock-directed classics are also featured, 1951’s Strangers on a Train, starring Robert Walker as a suitably creepy psychopath, and Rear Window (1954), with James Stewart as a bored, injured and confined photographer who believes his neighbor (Raymond Burr) is a murderer. There’s also 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, a modern retelling of the adventures of the bank-robbing pair, starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the partners in crime. Plus, there are two films set in 1970s New York City: Dog Day Afternoon (1975), with Al Pacino, based on a real 1972 bank robbery; and 1971’s Shaft, starring Richard Roundtree as the fictional private detective John Shaft, whose beat involves frequent interactions with the seedier elements of society.

31 Days of Oscar: Oscar Goes to Class
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Tonight’s Oscar-worthy primetime TCM programming focuses on stories about students — some cherubic; others, not so much. The opening film of this lineup, the William Wyler-directed The Children’s Hour (1961), definitely features the latter. Based on a Lillian Hellman play, the story follows events at a girls’ boarding school after a student bully accuses the two female proprietors (played by Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine) of having a lesbian relationship. Hardly likable kids are also the subjects of 1955’s Blackboard Jungle, starring Glenn Ford as an English teacher assigned the thankless task of instructing teenage juvenile delinquents, including one played by Sidney Poitier. On a somewhat lighter note, but dealing with hard topics nonetheless, is 1945’s The Corn Is Green, starring Bette Davis as a teacher in a Welsh mining community who sees potential in one of her students and attempts to help him rise above a dismal future. And in an even more gentle tale, Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), a musical with Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, we witness the positive and lasting influence a classical-language instructor has on generations of boys at an English public school.

Catch a Classic!

Though it may be freezing outside for some parts of the country, TCM’s lineup can be your oasis today, with a series of films set in a place where the sun is always shining and the heat is always on: the desert. The day rises with an adaptation of the Oscar Hammerstein musical The Desert Song (1929), which captures the steamy romance between a masked vigilante known as the Red Shadow and his unsuspecting lover — essentially a blueprint for every modern superhero story. The sands of time then sweep by with The Wind and the Lion (1975), an underseen epic starring an all-star cast of Sean Connery, Candice Bergen and John Huston. If you can weather these fiery adventures, make sure to stay for showings of Road to Morocco (1942), the third entry in the Bing Crosby and Bob Hope Road to… series, as well as the Oscar-nominated Morocco (1930), Sahara (1943), Khartoum (1966) and Them! A handful of other films follow, but no conversation about British romance would be complete without the bewitching tale of Elizabeth Bennet, played by Greer Garson, and Mr. Darcy, played by Laurence Olivier, in Pride and Prejudice (1940), the first feature adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel, which airs early morning Feb. 19.

Oscar Goes to Prison
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

TCM takes us behind bars for a showing of cinema’s ruminations on the justice and prison systems, beginning with the Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman classic Papillon (1973), about two men with nothing in common who form a friendship while serving their sentence in the South American penal colony on Devil’s Island. Following is an electric performance from Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard (1974), which cemented his ascension from “that guy?” to that guy as a disgraced football player who spends a stint in the clink inspiring a gridiron uprising behind bars. Loaded with a roster of real-life NFL role players and certified Hall of Famers, such as Ray Nitschke, the film lends added legitimacy to the story of Paul “Wrecking” Crewe and his team of misfits, transforming it into an unlikely, fist-pumping underdog tale. But any list of essential films about life spent in the slammer would be incomplete without a nod to the genre’s early innovators, including The Big House (1930), one of the first winners of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Weary River (1929).
