Next up, no film better captures Lewis’ manic brilliance than The Nutty Professor (1963). Written, directed by and starring Lewis, this inventive comedy tells the story of a bumbling science professor who transforms himself into the obnoxiously confident Buddy Love. Lewis’ dual performance remains a master class in comic timing and character work. Decades later, the movie still feels fresh and hilarious as it has inspired several remakes. More Lewis films follow, with The Bellboy (1960), Artists and Models (1955) and At War With the Army (1950).

Celebrate the Emerald Isle on St. Patrick’s Day with movies set in Ireland or featuring the Irish American experience. The stunt begins with Judy Garland and George Murphy in the 1940 musical Little Nellie Kelly. June Haver plays the “o’gorgeous girl who set the nation’s heart awhirl” in 1950’s The Daughter of Rosie O’Grady. John Ford directs 1957’s The Rising of the Moon, three vignettes about old Irish country life. In a more serious turn, James Cagney stars in 1959’s Shake Hands With the Devil, about an American medical student who gets recruited by the Irish Republican Army in 1921. Francis Ford Coppola directs Fred Astaire in 1968’s Finian’s Rainbow, a musical fantasy (and biting social satire) about an Irishman who steals a leprechaun’s pot of gold and buries it near Fort Knox. The programming event also includes 1958’s The Last Hurrah and 1965’s Young Cassidy.
