Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventures

In 1976, David Attenborough embarked on an ambitious three-year global odyssey to film Life on Earth, an innovative documentary of unprecedented scale. Attenborough and his team traveled to 40 countries to document over 600 species, facing extraordinary challenges along the way. They were almost lost at sea in the Indian Ocean, and endured a coup in the Comoros, gunshots in Rwanda, and threats from Idi Amin’s troops in Uganda and Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq. Written and presented by Attenborough, Life on Earth set out to “tell the greatest story in all the world”: how life on our planet evolved. Fifty years after production began, and in celebration of Attenborough’s 100th birthday, this documentary special offers rare, behind-the-scenes insight into the making of the groundbreaking series. Featuring exclusive interviews with Attenborough and his original crew, the special captures the triumphs and setbacks of filming the series with new technology during a pivotal era in television history.

FOX & Friends continues its all-American road trip in celebration of America250. Sponsored by Camping World, Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, Ainsley Earhardt and Lawrence Jones are traveling across the country in a branded RV to host the morning show from local restaurants and establishments in six different cities, with a stop today at The Big Biscuit in Lenexa, Kansas. In partnership with Camping World, one attendee from each of the six locations will be randomly selected for a chance to win the fully outfitted RV along with a trip to New York City for the live giveaway. Taking place on the set of FOX & Friends on July 3, the selectees from each stop will receive a key, of which only one will unlock the camper for its new owner. Tonight, TCM puts a highlight on movie biopics, honoring some of the most influential figures of our time in this lineup, kicking off with 1957’s Man of a Thousand Faces, which explores the groundbreaking life of Lon Chaney. Lon — played by James Cagney — is a vaudeville performer who falls in love with his assistant, later wife. She is horrified to discover Lon was raised by deaf-mute parents and leaves him once their son is born, though not for long. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. TCM continues to explore the lives and legacies of other stars in Valentino (1977), based on the life of Rudolph Valentino; The Perils of Pauline (1947), a fictional account of the rise to fame of silent film star Pearl White; The Jolson Story (1946), a highly fictionalized and musical account of singer Al Jolson; and Jeanne Eagels (1957), a look at the temperamental stage and silent film actress.

In Part 1 of a two-part showcase (Part 2 airs next Thursday), TCM leans into the subject matter of games people play or endure to survive, starting with Our Vines Have Tender Grapes (1945). The film follows a Norwegian farmer and his wife living in rural Wisconsin during World War II, trying to raise their daughter the best they can. Next up is Foul Play (1978), in which quiet librarian Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) ends up in the middle of an assassination plot. On her escapade to evade her stalkers, she falls in love with detective Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase). The film was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1979 Oscars. Lastly, 1959’s Western thriller No Name on the Bullet follows John Gant (Audie Murphy), a notorious gunman. As he rides into a small Arizona town, residents are apprehensive toward his arrival, convinced one of them must be marked for death.

From a young age, Jeni Haynes endured years of sexual abuse from her father and struggled to find anyone to believe her. In response, she developed dissociative identity disorder and created an army of alternate personalities (“alters”) to protect her. In 2019, at the age of 49, Haynes was finally able to seek justice in a landmark legal case as she and her alters testified in court.

Gregory Peck wore many hats over his 50-plus-year acting career. Tonight, Peck dons a cowboy hat as TCM showcases Westerns featuring the legendary performer in more complex roles. The evening begins with his most famous and influential film in the genre, 1950’s The Gunfighter, featuring Peck as Jimmy Ringo, an outlaw looking to reconnect with his family and leave his violent past behind but finding he can’t escape his notorious reputation. Next up is 1946’s Duel in the Sun, written by David O. Selznick, with Peck as the dark antihero Lewt McCanles. The film earned the nickname “Lust in the Dust” due to its sexually suggestive content. The antihero theme continues in 1971’s Shoot Out, making its TCM debut, with Peck portraying a former bank robber who seeks revenge against the partner who betrayed him. Also featured are 1974’s Billy Two Hats and 1958’s The Big Country. The programming block concludes with 1962’s How the West Was Won, with James Stewart and John Wayne, which took home three Oscars.

This 1982 epic about Indian leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, depicted by Best Actor Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, traces the events of his life from his career as a lawyer to the liberation of his native country from British subjugation to his assassination. Gandhi’s nobility, humility and sheer determination serve as a valuable testament to the perseverance of the human spirit. The late Richard Attenborough (brother of Planet Earth narrator Sir David Attenborough) spent nearly 20 years trying to get this biopic made and was rewarded with the Oscar for Best Director. The film won eight Academy Awards in total, including Best Picture.

Tonight, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by Saturday Night Live and Barry star Bill Hader, who introduces two films of his choosing. Hader will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and his own personal reflections on each. Hader has chosen the psychological drama Kanal (1957), which is set in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis and follows a group of resistance fighters who seek safety in Poland’s sewer system. Hader’s next choice, Salvatore Giuliano (1962), is set in postwar Sicily and shares the story of the man known as a murderer of Sicilian communists, among other things.
