The night begins with the heartwarming Record of a Tenement Gentleman (1947), in which a lonely boy (Hōhi Aoki) wanders the streets with no one to love him. With nobody volunteering to raise the boy, Otane (Chōko Iida) is assigned to take care of him, eventually growing to love him. The next two films are new to TCM: A Hen in the Wind (1948) and The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (1952). Both features follow life after World War II and the struggles married couples face as they move into the modern age. These two films are followed by the dramatic feature Early Spring (1956), in which office worker Shôji (Ryō Ikebe) has an affair with a colleague, prompting his wife, Masako (Chikage Awashima), to leave him. When the couple moves to the countryside, they attempt to start over in a new setting. The final movie of the night is the drama Tokyo Twilight (1957), where two sisters, Takako (Setsuko Hara) and Akiko (Ineko Arima), have a difficult life with their father, and their lives worsen as they find out the identity of their long-lost mother.

Kyle Larson vs. The Double
Prime Video
Original Film!

This feature-length documentary captures two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson’s two-year quest to complete one of auto racing’s most demanding challenges: racing in both the IndyCar Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the same day. “This documentary really shows what goes into trying to complete ‘The Double,’ not just on race day, but in the weeks and months leading up to it,” Larson says. “I’ve always felt like people watch us race, but they don’t see what it takes to get there. Having cameras around for two years gives a real look at my life — the preparation, the pressure, the travel, and the balance between racing and family. There are moments fans have never seen before, and I think it really captures how hard it is to do what we do and chase something big.” The Double is a combined 1,100 miles of racing across two different cities, two fundamentally different cars, and two of the most demanding tracks in the world. The logistical challenge is staggering — racing 500 miles at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, then flying from Indiana to North Carolina to climb into a stock car and complete NASCAR’s longest event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, all while managing the extreme physical toll of heat, dehydration, G-forces and mental exhaustion. Only a handful of drivers have ever dared to attempt it, but in 2024 and ’25, Larson pushed himself to the absolute limit in pursuit of one of racing’s most elusive accomplishments.

The Red Badge of Courage
TCM, 10:45am
Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ multiday marathon of war- and military-themed films continues today, beginning with the airing of 1951’s tear-jerker The Red Badge of Courage starring Audie Murphy. The film is a heartfelt drama about a young man’s dream of becoming a war hero and the harsh realities of what that takes. Director John Huston had somewhat of an epic experience trying to stay faithful to Stephen Crane’s classic 1895 novel on which the film was based. Stricken with studio problems and personal distractions (Huston got married to his fourth wife during filming and welcomed his son Tony), Huston did his best. He even appeared in a crowd scene as one of the experienced Union soldiers jeering the youth and other raw recruits, TCM shared. In the end, Huston lost his editorial control of the film to the studio heads at MGM, who reduced his original film by over one-third. Huston would go on to do The African Queen, but Courage would be remembered as a “mutilated masterpiece.” New Yorker journalist Lillian Ross’ 1952 book Picture shared the behind-the-scenes story of the chaotic production and studio mutilation of his film. Novelist Graham Greene said it best when he wrote an excerpt for the book’s jacket: “A terrifying picture of how a great film, directed by one of the best living directors, based on an American classic, can be slashed into incoherence through the timidities and the illiteracy of studio heads.”
