The Red Badge of Courage
TCM, 10:45am
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ multiday marathon of war- and military-themed films continues today, beginning with the airing of 1951’s tear-jerker The Red Badge of Courage starring Audie Murphy. The film is a heartfelt drama about a young man’s dream of becoming a war hero and the harsh realities of what that takes. Director John Huston had somewhat of an epic experience trying to stay faithful to Stephen Crane’s classic 1895 novel on which the film was based. Stricken with studio problems and personal distractions (Huston got married to his fourth wife during filming and welcomed his son Tony), Huston did his best. He even appeared in a crowd scene as one of the experienced Union soldiers jeering the youth and other raw recruits, TCM shared. In the end, Huston lost his editorial control of the film to the studio heads at MGM, who reduced his original film by over one-third. Huston would go on to do The African Queen, but Courage would be remembered as a “mutilated masterpiece.” New Yorker journalist Lillian Ross’ 1952 book Picture shared the behind-the-scenes story of the chaotic production and studio mutilation of his film. Novelist Graham Greene said it best when he wrote an excerpt for the book’s jacket: “A terrifying picture of how a great film, directed by one of the best living directors, based on an American classic, can be slashed into incoherence through the timidities and the illiteracy of studio heads.”
Summer of ’94
FOX, 12:30pm
As the United States prepares to cohost the 2026 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament next month, take a look back at one of the pivotal moments in the development of the sport in America. This feature-length documentary revisits the U.S. Men’s National Team’s experience at the 1994 World Cup, which took place for the first time in the States. With no professional league from which to draw talent, U.S. Soccer and manager Bora Milutinović — who became known as the “Miracle Worker” — had the Herculean task of assembling a squad that wouldn’t embarrass itself on home turf. But an upset victory over Group A opponent Colombia was enough to send the USMNT to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1934. Their tournament ended with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to eventual champion Brazil, but the event invigorated the sport in America and made icons of Alexi Lalas, Earnie Stewart, Cobi Jones, Eric Wynalda and Tony Meola. With new interviews, rare and archival footage, and raw video captured by players with their camcorders (remember those?), Summer of ’94 presents an in-depth look at a seminal time in American sport.
