Star of the Month: Marilyn Monroe
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night celebration of legendary actress Marilyn Monroe continues tonight, starting with Bus Stop (1956), a film that follows two Montana-based cowboys, Beauregard Decker (Don Murray) and Virgil Blessing (Arthur O’Connell), who meet a beautiful café singer named Chérie (Monroe). Chérie wants to make it big in Hollywood, and naive rodeo cowboy Beauregard is determined to lasso a new wife. After numerous tussles (and a literal kidnapping), Beauregard learns how to respect Chérie, which is all she really wanted in the first place. Monroe earned her first of two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for the role. Next is the unforgettable The Seven Year Itch (1955), a romantic comedy in which Monroe innocently befriends a neighbor (Tom Ewell) who is trying to resist his urges while feeling bored after seven years of marriage. Monroe escapes his clumsy advances unscathed, and Ewell’s Richard gets back on the straight and narrow. Lastly, the night concludes with Niagara (1953), which was the first of three films that year that ultimately cemented Monroe as a sex symbol. This was one of her more dramatic roles, playing an unrepentant femme fatale set on having her husband (Joseph Cotten) murdered by her lover during a trip to Niagara Falls.

Directed by George Roy Hill
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Join TCM in celebrating the amazing films directed by George Roy Hill, an Academy Award-winning director known for his polished, popular and narrative-led films. Tonight’s lineup starts with the romantic comedy Period of Adjustment (1962), a prime example of the marital problems that follow newlywed couples as they figure life out together and the additional complications that surface when some marry only for money. The film stars Anthony Franciosa, Lois Nettleton, Jim Hutton and Jane Fonda, with Fonda earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. The film is followed by two stories that focus heavily on dysfunctional family dynamics. In Toys in the Attic (1963), when two spinster sisters (Geraldine Page and Wendy Hiller) are visited by their brother Julian (Dean Martin) and his wife, Lily (Yvette Mimieux), the sisters’ possessiveness of Julian leaves Lily jealous and threatens to tear the entire family apart. The World of Henry Orient (1964) follows Valerie (Tippy Walker) and her best friend (Merrie Spaeth) as Valerie becomes obsessed with pianist Henry Orient (Peter Sellers) and follows him around New York City. The story shifts when Valerie’s infatuation with Henry is discovered and her troubled family life comes into focus. Hill’s featured films end with Hawaii (1966), based on James A. Michener’s epic novel. The drama follows an American missionary (Max von Sydow) and his wife (Julie Andrews) as they travel to Hawaii to convert the Native people to Christianity; however, the difference between the two cultures is too strong and leads to conflict.
