Father’s Day MOVIES!
MOVIES!, beginning at 12pm
Catch a Classic!
On Father’s Day, we celebrate the many facets of being a dad through a quartet of classics that look at family from a range of perspectives. It begins with 1950’s Father of the Bride, where Stanley Banks’ (Spencer Tracy) life is upended as he’s forced to deal with the heartache of letting go of his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) while at the same time planning her wedding. While Stanley eventually comes to terms with Kay’s new life and regains a sense of peace, his world is shattered again in the 1951 sequel Father’s Little Dividend, when Stanley learns he’s about to become a grandfather — a role he thinks he’s way too young to take on. Life is much different for the Gilbreth family in 1950’s Cheaper by the Dozen, where eccentric engineer father Frank (Clifton Webb), along with his wife Lillian (Myrna Loy), raises their 12 children through unorthodox methods, often using them as guinea pigs for his studies. The last film in the lineup is the star-studded, Oscar-winning On Golden Pond (1981), featuring crotchety father Norman (Henry Fonda), feisty wife Ethel (Katharine Hepburn) and estranged daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) as they are reunited at the family’s summer home. While many disaster films unleash obvious destruction, others simmer in the dread of what could happen. The latter describes 1971’s The Andromeda Strain, part of TCM’s continuing June spotlight on disaster movies. When a town’s residents are found dead after a satellite crashes, scientists race to contain a lethal organism that turns human blood into powder, set against the backdrop of a clock that’s ticking down toward nuclear destruction. The next two films tap into the “last man on Earth” trope: The Omega Man (1971), with Charlton Heston as the lone survivor of a global biological catastrophe; and The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959), with Harry Belafonte as a trapped miner who emerges to find a world devoid of people after the spread of radioactive dust. TCM’s “Summer of Darkness” continues with a trio of 1940s films noir built around crime, fate and morally troubled protagonists who can’t escape the consequences of their previous actions. First up is 1947’s Out of the Past, starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer, about a former detective trying to leave his shady history behind, only to find himself drawn back into a world of corruption, betrayal and a doomed love affair he can’t resist. Next, in 1948’s Raw Deal, we follow Joe Sullivan (Dennis O’Keefe), an escaped convict torn between two women who’s out for revenge on the mob boss (Raymond Burr) who double-crossed him. Last up is 1948’s Moonrise, a psychological thriller about a man haunted by his father’s execution and brutalized by lifelong bullying whose fatal clash with his tormentor drives him into a spiral of shame and guilt that threatens to consume him.
