Fans of cuteness are the winners when Animal Planet pits “Puppies vs Babies”

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP This Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10pm ET/PT, Animal Planet’s Puppies vs. Babies begins its first installment of three one-hour specials that seek to determine which is cuter — baby humans or baby animals. (Although it is called Puppies vs. Babies, trailer clips seem to also include toddlers and older kids in the mix with babies, along with kitties in addition to puppies). Wherever you fall in the debate (I’m not afraid to take a side — go puppies!), it’s a good bet you’ll be awwwing all throughout this battle, which takes the 16 most popular […]

VOD Spotlight: “Green Lantern”

As any fan of the Green Lantern comic series knows, the plots concern the clash between fear and will. And for star Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal), who plays Hal Jordan in the film Green Lantern, there was a great deal of will needed while making the movie because his role of a test pilot turned intergalactic superhero required he overcome his own fear of flying, beginning with his transport to the Lantern home planet of Oa.

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Perhaps trying to recapture the feeling of that long-ago time right after the original Halloween came out, when every horror movie seemed to have a holiday theme, Syfy has announced a new slate of holiday-related films in its infamous Saturday Original Movie franchise. VOD Spotlight: “Horrible Bosses”

The comedy Horrible Bosses features three helpless schmucks (played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis) who meet over drinks to diss three of the worst bosses in film history. But the fact that the put-on employees’ plot to kill their bosses become funny is because the bosses are so over-the-top horrible. Two of the actors playing bosses, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey, have played villains before, but for Friends star Jennifer Aniston, the role of sexual predator was new to her. She plays a dentist whose hilariously overt advances toward her assistant are the likely reason the film […]

Twitter-feed ghosts of TV series past

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP This morning, while perusing my Twitter feed, I happened to glance over at the “Who to Follow” suggestions off to the side and noticed that the Twitter feed for NBC’s Free Agents was among the recommendations. I found this odd, since the show had been canceled last week. Why would I want to follow a feed that likely will not be updated, and which probably should be deleted at this point? I remembered a similar experience I had in seeing that the Twitter feed for FOX’s Lone Star — a show we really liked last […]

VOD Spotlight: The cars of “Fast Five”

“Top gear and full throttle” is a phrase that most speed demons only dream of in our 65-mph world, but the romance of speed fuels The Fast and the Furious films. In the fifth installment of the roaring franchise, Fast Five, the stakes are even higher and the stunts more awe-inspiring. At the heart of the speed-driven film is the 1970 Dodge Charger that Dom (Vin Diesel) drives. It killed Dom’s father and was totaled twice, but, like the Terminator, it keeps coming back. Picture car coordinator — yes, a film like this needs someone with that title — Dennis […]
