Syfy’s “Haven” integrates Twitter-based storyline starting tonight

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP In what could be the first successful interactive storytelling merging of a TV series with Twitter, Syfy’s Haven will begin a seven-episode story arc that flows between the show itself and Twitter, starting with tonight’s episode (10pm ET/PT). “Although there have been simple integrations [with Twitter] before, no one has fully and organically integrated Twitter into the fabric of the show in the way Haven is doing,” says Craig Engler, general manager and senior vice president of Syfy Digital. “If you watch Haven and use Twitter, you’re in for a real treat.”

ABC invites you to a “Karaoke Battle”

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP For those who may have thought that other singing competition series like American Idol and The Voice are basically akin to karaoke bars, albeit usually with more talent than you normally find in a karaoke bar, now you get to see what actual karaoke competitions are like in ABC’s new series Karaoke Battle USA, premiering tonight at 9pm ET with a two-hour episode. Joey Fatone, Carnie Wilson, music journalist Joe Levy and Brian “The Cowboy” Scott (billed as a “Karaoke Legend” and the 2009 National Karaoke Champion), travel to regional karaoke competitions at House of […]

VOD Spotlight: “Jumping the Broom”

In African-American weddings, jumping the broom — a tradition that has its roots in African ritual — signifies the merging of two families. In the comedy Jumping the Broom, it may take a lot more than an old ritual to merge the ultra-upper-class family of bride Sabrina (Paula Patton) with the working class family of groom Jason (Laz Alonso), particularly when his mother’s pride surfaces in the first meeting of the in-laws at the bride’s parents estate on Cape Cod. But this is a romantic comedy, one produced by Bishop T.D. Jakes, so it’s no surprise that, with a bit […]

VOD Spotlight: “Your Highness”

Following her Oscar-winning performance in Black Swan, Natalie Portman was ready to take on something entirely different and signed on for a role in David Gordon Green’s medieval comedy Your Highness. It’s a film also noteworthy for reuniting James Franco and Danny McBride (both of whom appeared in Green’s film Pineapple Express) and putting all of them in a film that combines the slapstick of Monty Python with the high adventure of Dragonslayer and Krull.

VOD Spotlight: “Paul”

In Shaun of the Dead, comic actor Simon Pegg battled zombies. In Paul, he befriends an alien who needs help getting to his mother ship. Beyond the sci-fi premises, the films share another connection. Shaun was shot at a time when the damp British climate was being particularly nasty. Pegg swore he wanted to make a movie shot “somewhere it never rains, like a desert,” and said his next movie should be “a road trip with an alien in the American Southwest” where things were presumably warm and dry. A few years later, as Pegg was finishing Hot Fuzz, producer […]

TCA Summer Press Tour: FOX Party at the Beach

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP After yesterday’s FOX panels (more on them in a later post), FOX shuttled us out to the coast to Gladstones in Malibu for their All-Star party. Located where Santa Monica Boulevard meets the Pacific Coast Highway, Gladstones is situated on prime real estate — beachfront, on the Pacific. My shuttle arrived in time to see a spectacular sunset lending a cool glow to the establishment, the rocks along the coast, the surfers catching waves and the pelicans diving for their dinner. The smell of saltwater was in the air, and a nice, cool breeze came […]

TCA Summer Press Tour: Torture, Witches, H8Rs, Love Labs and more

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Thursday was my first full day at the TCA press tour,  and the sessions ran the gamut with mostly interesting, and sometimes odd, panels of Showtime and CW programs. Things kicked off with Damian Lewis talking about getting peed on a few days ago, and finished up with talk of Dr. Drew’s Love Lab, if that gives you any indication of the day. “Homeland” Security The first panel was for Showtime’s new drama series Homeland, which looks really good. Stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Morena Baccarin were here to discuss it, along with executive […]

Showtime debuts “Homeland” trailer

This morning at the TCA press tour Showtime premiered a new promotional trailer for its cool-looking new drama series Homeland, which premieres Oct. 2 (following the season premiere of Dexter) and stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin and Mandy Patinkin. Danes plays a CIA officer who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of a U.S. soldier (Lewis) who had been missing and presumed dead was a set-up and may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. Howard Gordon (24) is an executive producer.
