Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards airing on OWN

Almost every year around Oscar nominations time, the question tends to be asked about where the black filmmakers and actors are among the nominees. Women of color in particular seem to be left out of the Oscar conversation on many occasions. I’m not sure if the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards were created as a response to real or perceived snubs from the Academy, but, now in its eighth annual installment, the ceremony does a good job of recognizing top African-American women in the entertainment industry. This year’s ceremony will air in a taped presentation Feb. 21 at 10pm […]

Adventure Time miniseries, Powerpuff Girls reboot among Cartoon Network’s upfront slate

Cartoon Network released its programming slate for the 2015-16 upfront season, and among the highlights are an Adventure Time miniseries and a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls. In the special Adventure Time miniseries, Finn and Jake face a new threat to Ooo when Princess Bubblegum’s experiment unleashes ghosts from Marceline’s past. There was no indication yet when this will air. The Powerpuff Girls is slated for a 2016 launch, and is a reboot of one of Cartoon Network’s most enduring series, which debuted in 1998, centering on “three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning […]

“Two and a Half Men” ends its run tonight

It was never one of my favorites, but you have to hand it to Two and a Half Men — like other Chuck Lorre productions (looking at you, The Big Bang Theory), the series has maintained remarkable staying power despite airdate changes, cast changes, infighting and generally lukewarm critical response. However, all things must end, and so, too will Two and a Half Men, when it ends its 12-season run with a one-hour series finale tonight at 9pm ET/PT on CBS. Details on the Two and a Half Men series finale have been guarded, but ahead of the episode airing, here are some historical tidbits about […]

Amazon greenlights full seasons of “The Man in the High Castle,” other original series

After becoming Amazon’s most-watched pilot ever back in January, the original series The Man in the High Castle has been extended to a full season, Amazon announced today. The drama is based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternate-history novel set in a world where the Axis powers of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan won World War II and have split much of the world, including the United States, between them. Amazon’s development process allows customers to provide feedback on pilots they want to see turned into series. So far, Amazon has greenlit 13 series, including Transparent, which comes back for Season […]

Keeping Up with the Kardashians returning to E! for Season 10

Even when their reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians is not currently airing, you just can’t seem to avoid the Kardashian family, at least if you are online at all. Whether it’s Khloe engaging in a Twitter feud with Amber Rose, or Bruce Jenner’s transition into a woman, or Bruce and Kris’ divorce, the Kardashians have exploded from reality TV into most people’s reality to some degree, whether invited or not. But apparently many folks do like inviting this family into their lives. Keeping Up with the Kardashians is the E! network’s most-watched series, and it’s back for Season 10 starting March […]

Fascinating PBS series explores history of “The Italian Americans”

Thanks to a society largely dominated by pop culture, the view of Italian-Americans among most of their fellow citizens might fall within the realm of The Sopranos or The Godfather, or even Jersey Shore. While elements from each of these can be found in Italian-American society, there are, as with every other group, things that are perhaps less recognized and celebrated. The new two-night PBS series The Italian Americans, following in the footsteps of the network’s similarly themed Latino Americans and The African Americans, looks to give the full history of Italians in America. Each hourlong episode in the four-part […]

Cinemax picks up new Robert Kirkman drama series “Outcast”

Will Cinemax have the next Walking Dead on its hands? I’m sure it hopes so, following today’s announcement that the network has picked up the 10-episode drama series Outcast, created and executive produced by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and based on the comic by Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta. From Cinemax: “Outcast follows Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson, a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle […]

Mountain Monsters Season 3 will be a “Bigfoot Edition”

Destination America is becoming a network that seems heavily focused on paranormal programming. In February, the network debuted the new series True Supernatural, Ghosts in My House and Ghostly Encounters, and the channel has a backlog of other monster- and ghost-related programs in its library. One of those series that has been a hit — and, in fact, is Destination America’s No. 1 series, according to the network — has been Mountain Monsters, and Mountain Monsters Season 3 begins on March 7. Mountain Monsters Season 3 is billed as a “Bigfoot Edition,” and kicks off with eight episodes featuring the pursuit of Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) across the region (the second […]
