Tosh.0 gets “family-friendly” tonight

For the first time in its six-season history, Comedy Central’s hit series Tosh.0 will air a “family-friendly” edition. Being a program that showcases the wildest viral videos from the Internet, Tosh.0 regularly includes clips that certainly are not suitable for younger viewers. Tonight, Oct. 7, however, the program promises a show “completely devoid of puking, bodily injuries, strong language with little or no sexual dialogue or situations.” While that may be a buzzkill for some, it will allow the more sensitive and younger viewers to tune in for once (but don’t get used to it). “Comedy isn’t about being clean […]

Preview: TLC’s “Preaching Alabama”

Opening a church in the thick of the Bible Belt might be a bit like carrying coal to Newcastle, as the old saying goes, but that is not stopping the Speegle family in TLC’s new, six-part reality series Preaching Alabama from trying. The clan, headed by father Allen and mother Janice, had thrived in central Florida with a community church for over 20 years. Now about to retire, Allen and Janice are ready to turn over the church to their children — eldest daughter Jill, and her husband Rod and daughter Abi; and youngest daughter Lori, and her husband Seth. “Twin Peaks” returning with new episodes in 2016

TV viewers who were around in the early ’90s surely recall David Lynch and Mark Frost’s creepy, cult-favorite series Twin Peaks. (It may be remembered by some more for its definitely eerie ambiance than for its ultimately unsatisfying mystery, but the atmosphere, including the moody musical score by Angelo Badalamenti, often more than made up for plot deficiencies.) The series originally ran two seasons (1990-91) on ABC, and was followed by the 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. After 25 years, Twin Peaks is coming back, as a nine-episode limited series on Showtime, which made the announcement […]

“The Flash” is another enjoyable DC Comics adaptation for The CW

DC Comics may still be trying to catch up with Marvel on the big screen, but when it comes to TV series, it is leading the way. Along with The CW’s current series Arrow and FOX’s new Gotham, as well as the long run of the former CW series Smallville, DC seems to have had a better sense of how to translate its classic creations to the small screen rather than in feature films at this point (though I’m sure they are hoping the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will change that), and that continues with the new […]

“SNL Vintage” commemorates 40 years of “Saturday Night Live”

Saturday Night Live begins its 40th season on NBC this Saturday, Sept. 27, with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande (and former cast member Darrell Hammond taking over announcing duties from the late Don Pardo). The series premiered on Oct. 11, 1975, and since then has become a pop-culture staple, launching the careers of many now-famous comic actors. Several episodes of SNL have become famous themselves, either because of a notable host, a hilarious sketch, a prominent musical guest or a combination of all of the above. NBC is going to be airing what it considers “iconic” episodes […]
