Interview: Jason Beghe of “Chicago Fire” spinoff “Chicago PD”

“From what I understand,” Jason Beghe tells me, “that when the character of Voight was introduced [on Chicago Fire], the ratings had a bump.” Beghe is talking about how his character of police officer Sgt. Hank Voight in Chicago PD (Jan. 8 on NBC), a spinoff from the popular Chicago Fire, came to be the star of another series after beginning as a recurring character on Fire. When fans met Voight on Chicago Fire, he was a man of seeming moral ambiguity, which turned out to be part of his cover. But it may also be part of Voight himself, […]

Steve Franks on Psych Season 8

The fan-favorite mystery/comedy series Psych is USA Network’s longest-running series, and it continues that run when Psych Season 8 premieres Jan. 8 at 9pm ET/PT. When I spoke with Psych creator/writer/director/executive producer Steve Franks last month about the special Psych: The Musical, he also talked a little bit about Psych Season 8. How many episodes make up Psych Season 8? Can you talk about some of the episodes? Steve Franks: There are only 10 episodes, but some of my favorite stuff that we’ve ever done. … The first one that I did was born out of something I couldn’t do for […]

Puppy Bowl 2014 celebrates event’s 10th anniversary

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl 2014 is the 10th anniversary edition of the hugely popular (12.4 million viewers last year) Super Bowl Sunday counter-programming event. Puppy Bowl helped popularize the trend of networks airing special programming “bowls,” and Puppy Bowl X will now also have cute competition from Hallmark Channel’s first Kitten Bowl, airing on the same day (Feb. 2). How does Animal Planet look to stay leader of the pack with Puppy Bowl X? Aside from the usual cuddly canine competitors and the Kitty Halftime Show, Puppy Bowl 2014 will have new additions, including penguin cheerleaders and even the first […]

Interview: Billy Campbell of Syfy’s “Helix”

“I kind of think of this show as a mashup of The Andromeda Strain, John Carpenter’s The Thing and The Walking Dead,” Billy Campbell tells me of his new Syfy series Helix, premiering Jan. 10. Prior to the interview, watching the pilot, that is almost exactly what I thought about this 13-episode thriller (except, for me, parts of the show called to mind 28 Days Later more so than The Walking Dead). Helix does indeed combine classic sci-fi elements from those titles — a disease outbreak, a group of people at a fairly claustrophobic, remote Arctic outpost, and, eventually, at […]

Having just completed its run in the U.K. — where it was Britain’s highest-rated television drama in 2013 — Downton Abbey Season 4 now makes its way across the pond starting Jan. 5 on PBS and airing eight weeks.
