Tonight on “Downsized”: It’s crying time

By Lori Acken Follow @ChannelGuideLLA After last week’s jewelry-sale-and-junk-van debacles, Laura thinks it’s time to enlist a third party to help her and Todd with their communication issues the way Dean has helped them with their financial issues. Todd balks at first, but gives in and agrees to go.

“Oprah’s Lifeclass” and “The Rosie Show” debut tonight on OWN

By Lori Acken Follow @ChannelGuideLLA Addressing gathered journalists at the summer Television Critics Association press tour, Oprah said it was time to own up to what was happening at OWN. The Oprah Winfrey Network — OWN for short — debuted in January with much fanfare, lots of retread programming and tepid ratings, disappointing her massive fan base and the media superpower herself. So with her legendary syndicated show ended, Winfrey named herself CEO of the struggling network and set to work melding it with her longstanding Harpo Productions. “I can tell you now, I am officially in,” Winfrey told the […]

Dance Moms finale: And it’s Chloe for the win!

By Lori Acken Follow @ChannelGuideLLA I knew it! I said! Way back in episode …well, whatever episode it was where the Big New York Casting Agent came! I said this: “So now that I’ve accepted this new reality in this new reality show, I feel equally secure in tossing this prediction: Despite the fact that she has done nothing but dance joyfully, express her love for her peers and look splendid in an inappropriate pile of brown eye-shadow — Maddie is about to get her comeuppance at the hands of Chloe. I say this for several reasons. One, because that would make […]

More of our interview with Jeanne Tripplehorn, star of Lifetime’s breast cancer anthology “Five”

When I picked up the phone to interview Jeanne Tripplehorn about her pivotal role in Five — Lifetime’s star-saturated film anthology that is the showpiece of its long-running “Stop Breast Cancer For Life” initiative — it was Tripplehorn who began asking questions. “They sent me some information,” she said of the PR folks at Lifetime who connected us. “You are a breast cancer survivor?” I told her I am. “Congratulations!” said the actress, who plays Pearl, an oncologist whose mother’s death inspired her to specialize in breast cancer — and who is the one character that ties all five films […]

By Lori Acken Anne Burrell — Mario Batali’s right-hand woman on Iron Chef America who’s gone on to star in Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and Worst Cooks In America — is awed that Food Network’s faithful fan base has turned her and her pals into the rock stars of the gustatory set. Now she’s looking to return the favor. Tomorrow marks the release of Burrell’s first cookbook, titled Cook Like A Rock Star, which spotlights Burrell’s infectious wit and fearless personality — and her sincere belief that you can cook well, too, with a little friendly guidance. “That’s what the message […]

truTV’s “Hardcore Pawn” finale: Hardcore truths for the Gold family

They may be beaming in the publicity shot above, but don’t let the sunny smiles fool you. In a season that has seen expert negotiator — and unapologetic daddy’s girl — Ashley leave the ranks of American Jewelry and Loan, then return at Dad Les’ behest, albeit with plans to split the business in two and send brother Seth packin’, it’s hard to imagine that things could get tougher for the Gold family. Never mind all the testy sellers that frequent their shop and make the family’s own hair-trigger tempers worse. On Tuesday night’s Season Finale of truTV’s Hardcore Pawn, […]

“Little People, Big World” returns to TLC with the first of four new specials

By Lori Acken Follow @ChannelGuideLLA If you’ve been wondering what happened to Matt and Amy Roloff and their rapidly-growing kids since the family’s popular TLC series, Little People, Big World ended last year, the network has good news. The Roloffs are back for a series of four hourlong specials intended to give their faithful fans (myself firmly among them) closure on what were some pretty major — and heartrending — cliffhangers in the series finale.
