And Then There Were Three On American Idol

by Ruth Anne Boulet Tonight’s results show is a whole ton of filler for a 5 second show. I know that all results shows are a ton of filler, but with this episode, American Idol is shoving as many performances as possible to keep our interest. That’s probably a wise move. As the season draws to a close, viewers get more & more emotionally invested in the outcome. There’s less tolerance for stupid patter between the judges. Like a really stupid Ford commercial. Wow. Does American Idol want Ford to go away? It seems like it with the amount of […]

American Idol Wants To Rock!

Paula Abdul was addicted to painkillers for years. Shocking. It’s like finding out Clay Aiken is gay. Ryan tells us that there was an accident right before the show started with glass exploding everywhere. That’s putting it mildly. To get the on the scene reporting, check out MJ’s Twitter account. We get a Slash package, which omits that David Bowie was a father figure. I learned that this weekend. Seriously, check out Wikipedia. For those of you who may not approve of the Rock and or Roll, let me share a little something with you. Rock can be learned to […]

American Idol Takes It Down To Four

by Ruth Anne Boulet Over 47 million votes came in last night. Way to participate, America! Idol seems to be losing energy on the Ford Commercial. This one is done to the song titled ‘Energy’ and the Idols don’t have much of it. They basically get to stand still & fake run. Then stand still again. They’re even shot from a distance so they don’t have to sing. The Idols must be getting tired. This week’s group number is “It Don’t Mean a Thing” … and I can’t tell if they were actually singing it or not. It sounded a […]

American Idol Takes On The Rat Pack

So this week’s theme is the Rat Pack. The question is — how tightly will American Idol adhere to the Rat Pack, or will it simply be songs of that era? American Idol has decided that Jamie Foxx would be the best mentor for Rat Pack week. Huh? Oh, they give us a ‘package’ telling us just how much it makes sense. Whatever. I barely listened. Kris Allen — The Way You Look Tonight Jamie notes that Kris isn’t trying to sing The Throat Olympics. He also said if Kris loses, they could maybe do something together. Ok, Jamie, you’re […]

Double Elimination Time On American Idol

by Ruth Anne Boulet This week we’re back to lip syncing. But at least this week, it’s with a purpose. The Idols are lip-syncing because they are being choreographed by the one & only Paula Abdul. Paula did not work with them on lip syncing. Ryan first pulls out Lil Rounds & brings her to the middle of the stage. But this time, instead of sending her over to the stools of doom, she just gets sent packing right at the top of the show. It’s almost as if Idol has decided she’s not worth the time anymore, so just […]

American Idol Left My Cake Out In The Rain On Disco Night

So it’s Disco Night on American Idol and the battle is on! Not between the contestants, but between the producers and the clock. We get no context as to how Idol defines disco. Was it time frame? Artists? Instrumentation? We’ll never know; we can only suppose a guess. One thing I know about this week’s episode is that I’m sorely disappointed in the lack of MacArthur Park in this week’s episode. Come on, kids! Carrie Underwood did it. Sigh. I guess it’s up to me…. Lil Rounds — I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan Spring was never waiting for us, […]

American Idol Cuts Down To 6, Or Not?

Quentin Tarantino thinks he knows who is going to leave. Of course he does. We all have an idea of who is going to leave. But are we right? Only 55 minutes of filler stands between America and the answer. We start off with the Ford commercial, which features Idols on magazine covers singing “Freeze Frame.” Then we move into the group sing of Michael Sembello’s “Maniac.” Where’s Jennifer Beals when you need her? Adam and Danny get to sing from the big American Idol towers. Matt did a twirl — we’re featuring Matt a lot in this episode. A […]

American Idol Goes To The Movies

Given the theme of this week’s American Idol — songs from the Movies — and the fact that Quentin Tarantino will be the ‘mentor’ to the Idol kids, do you think we should just hand the week over to Adam? I mean, seriously, songs that largely have a dramatic arc and a freakish mentor? That’s a total gimme for Adam to screw up. So according to Vote For The Worst, we’re going to be treated to two — TWO — Bryan Adams songs. Blech. Have I mentioned lately that I can’t stand Bryan Adams? Can’t. Stand. Him. What on earth […]

The American Idol Axe Takes Another Swing

Before we get started, I need to share this clip. Adam Lambert fans, you’re welcome: Paula’s dressed like a corpse bride in a prom dress, complete with white satin gloves. I fast-forwarded through it, but for some reason Frankie Avalon is singing “Venus.” It just reminds me of a naughty joke version by Kevin Meany. The other song rhymes with Venus… Oh, Frankie is singing that song because it was released the year Simon was born. The kids are ‘singing’ “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” by Kylie Minogue. I think they’re actually singing this one, ’cause Lil was not […]

The Year They Were Born On American Idol

Danny Gokey — Stand By Me by Ben E King This song is a bit of a stretch for the whole ‘year you were born’ thing. The song was written about 20 years before Danny Gokey was born. Ok, so he’s doing the version from the movie. Whatever, it’s still a stretch. Danny does not start off well. I’m not sure if he’s ever gone first before, so he may not be ready for it. He also does this really slow drawn-out beginning and moves into a really boring adult contemporary middle. Yawn. I may be the target demo for […]
