Kige Ramsey Agrees With This

Thanks to Deadspin for introducing me to Kige Ramsey of “YouTube Sports,” a college student who has been vlogging prolifically with insightful commentary on topical sports issues. Some of us here are addicted to his YouTubes. If one of the major multimedia sports entities does not hire this kid immediately, I don’t want to hear any more B.S. about how “cutting edge” they are. I recommend the entire Kige Ramsey collection.

“The Kill Point” Countdown: Part 7

We’re coming down to the wire on The Kill Point Countdown, with the show premiering July 22 on Spike. Next week I’ll have a roundup of random questions I asked the cast, plus my review of the first episode! When I think back to 17 or 18 years ago, I probably would’ve freaked if someone told me I’d someday be interviewing a guy whose face was printed on my younger sister’s bedsheets. Donnie Wahlberg has definitely come a long way since the New Kids on the Block. He’s developed into quite a solid actor, and I was impressed with his […]

Whether it is the Red Sox reversing the curse, Texas’ thrilling comeback in the Rose Bowl over USC or Peyton Manning […]

“The Kill Point” Countdown: Part 6

The extended version of my Channel Guide Magazine story from the set of Spike’s The Kill Point is now up at ChannelGuideMag.com, so be sure to check it out. It includes my interview with John Leguizamo, plus some other things that aren’t in The Kill Point Countdown blog. Steve Shill serves as coexective producer and directs all eight episodes of The Kill Point. His credits as director read like a roster of the best dramas on TV: Rome, The Tudors, ER, Dexter, Brotherhood, The Sopranos, The Wire. Shill’s involvement, probably more than anything else, signals to me that The Kill […]

Joakim Noah: The People’s Princess

You know, if ESPN’s NBA Draft coverage was more like this brilliant YouTube, maybe we’d have more interest in it. I interviewed Stephen A. Smith two years ago when Quite Frankly was a promising new enterprise. It was one morning during the NBA Finals, and I think he was half asleep … yet everything he said was important!

“The Kill Point” Countdown: Part 5

I talked with actor Jeremy Davidson on the set of The Kill Point in Pittsburgh. Davidson plays the bank robber known as Mr. Rabbit (the older brother of Mr. Pig, played by Frank Grillo). Davidson’s pictured at right in this action photo from Spike. His character wears a beard, a suit and tie, and matching combat boots. Davidson looks like a natural with a shotgun, ducking in and out of the bank hallway, blasting at SWAT guys infiltrating the bank in a scene they were shooting that morning. In person, Davidson is a softspoken guy. He tells me that he’s […]

You’re Invited To The “Shaq’s Big Challenge” Premiere Party!

Among the detritus of summer throwaway reality series season is a true gem of a show: Shaq’s Big Challenge premiering June 26 at 9pm ET on ABC. If you saw the May issue of Channel Guide Magazine, you know of our love of all things Shaquille O’Neal — especially any of his endeavors off the basketball court. In Shaq’s Big Challenge, the Miami Heat big man will help transform six obese, sedentary middle-school students in Florida into healthy, active youngsters. (ESPN’s Page 2 has an interview with Shaq about the show.) So it would be a great disservice to civilization […]

“The Kill Point” Countdown: Part 4

The July 22 premiere of Spike’s The Kill Point is a little over a month away, and we’ve still got a lot more coverage of the series coming. The July issue of Channel Guide Magazine has a special On The Set section where you can read about the filming of some of the gun battles in the bank and some of my interview with John Leguizamo, and there’ll be more from the set on staytunedmag.com. In The Kill Point Countdown posts, there’re also my interviews with actor Jeremy Davidson, Donnie Wahlberg and director Steve Shill yet to come. My preview […]

The 4th OT: Into The “Ruff” Stuff

Hopefully you saw the review of the movie Ruffian in the June issue of Channel Guide Magazine. The ESPN Original Entertainment movie premieres Sunday on ABC/ABC HD and stars Sam Shepard and Frank Whaley. It’s based on the true story of Ruffian, considered to be the best thoroughbred filly of all time. It’s a good effort, and while I’m not a fan of the whole horse movie genre (I prefer the monkey genre), Ruffian kept my interest even though I knew it would have a Barbaro-type ending. The 4th OT will be on vacation next week, as I’m cutting a […]
