Golf’s FedExCup tees of with the Barclays on Golf Channel, CBS

The beauty of the FedExCup Playoffs is it brings the best golfers in the world together in a format similar to college basketball’s NCAA Tournament. The main difference, of course, is that there is a $10 million prize for the last golfer standing and another $25 million to split amongst the other competitors. Yeah, you could say there’s a lot on the line. The top 123 ranked golfers will convene in Farmingdale, New York, Thursday for the first round of the four-tournament event. The Barclay’s is the first of the four tournaments, and only those ranked in the top 100 on […]

Five ways to fix “American Idol”

American Idol is not only close to jumping the shark, it is getting dangerously close to getting eaten by it. And with the show changing judges quicker than Simon Cowell can put away a carton of cigarettes, it would be wise for FOX to revamp the competition immediately. FOX had a good thing going back in the day when the only three judges were Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Fearing that viewers were getting tired of the trio, executives made the ill-fated decision to replace Abdul with Kara DioGuardi and then add Ellen DeGeneres to the mix. The four-panel […]

PGA Championship Preview: Tournament will have a European feel

If some of the European golfers participating in this week’s PGA Championship appear to feel at home on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, it’s probably because it plays much more like something you’d find on the other side of the pond. With the way the course is designed, 10 holes run alongside the Atlantic Ocean and are subjected to inconsistent winds. In fact, it’s said that a player’s club selection on the par-3, 17th hole can range anywhere from a 7-iron to a 3-wood depending on the direction and gusts of the wind. Disney’s “Code 9” allows kids to punk their parents

Parents, your worst nightmare has officially arrived. With all of the prank shows on TV nowadays, it was only a matter of time before some network came up with a opportunity for kids to embarrass their folks nationally. And thanks to Disney Channel, that nightmare comes in the form of Code 9 (tonight, 7:30pm ET). I knew something was askew last week when my kids (ages 9 and 7) told me I had to sit down and watch “this cool new show” with them. They thought the idea of children making their mom and dad look silly was the funniest thing […]

New sheriff pulls the plug on A&E series “Cajun Justice”

It might be the understatement of the year to say that the new sheriff of Terrebonne Parrish is not a big fan of reality TV. In fact, if A&E were to compile its “10 Most Wanted,” chances are Jerry Larpenter would be at the top of its list. Reality shows come and go for one reason or another, but the situation with A&E’s Cajun Justice is a precedent nobody ever could have imagined. The show followed Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois (pictured) and his deputies as they patrolled the swamps of Louisiana until Bourgeois lost his position to Larpenter. Many lawmen might […]

British Open Preview: Can Tiger fend off the Europeans?

Raise your hand if you had Webb Simpson winning the U.S. Open last month and Bubba Watson donning the green jacket after this April’s Masters. Chances are there aren’t many honest people raising their hand right now, and therein lies what is so great about professional golf today. With the British Open teeing off tomorrow morning, there are many more questions than answers about who will walk away with the prestigious Claret Jug. Similar to the U.S. Open, the British Open is oftentimes more about about survival than simply sheer talent. The golfers who best navigate the challenging Royal Lytham […]

Savannah Guthrie steps into the hot seat on NBC’s “Today”

One could argue that the toughest job in all of television news is picking the right person to anchor a very lucrative morning show, and NBC execs are currently praying to the TV gods that they made the right choice to replace Ann Curry with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show. Truth be told, the hardest part of the decision was not replacing Curry. She was and will continue to be a great reporter for NBC, but she was a fish out of water in an environment where hosts have to do everything from grilling politicians to grilling chicken. In one […]

Matt LeBlanc shines as Matt LeBlanc in Showtime’s “Episodes”

Many actors struggle to find consistent work after appearing on hit TV shows, but Matt LeBlanc seems to have come up with the perfect blueprint for how to avoid the dreaded typecasting pitfall. First, you try a spinoff as that same character — as he did with Joey after Friends ended its reign — and when that doesn’t work, you find a show in which you simply play yourself. The second time is apparently the charm, because LeBlanc not only received a Golden Globe for his performance in the hit Showtime show Episodes, but he is now on one of […]

“Burn Notice” returns to USA lineup tonight with a bang

Sometimes it takes being away from an old friend to make you realize how much you appreciate them, and that’s exactly how I feel about the show Burn Notice. So you can imagine my excitement that one of the most underrated shows on all of television is returning tonight to the USA Network lineup. Premiering tonight at 9pm ET, Burn Notice starts right where we left off at the end of last season. Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) is scouring Miami looking for Anson (Jere Burns), who is out to ruin his career and his personal life by blackmailing him. Fiona Glenanne […]

U.S. Open is up for grabs due to treacherous Olympic Club course

Nowadays when you are talking about who to beat in a major golf tournament, names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson are sure to enter the conversation. But when the 112th U.S. Open kicks off on ESPN and NBC Thursday (see full TV schedule here), the biggest obstacle won’t be the players but the course itself. The U.S. Open prides itself on challenging — and punishing — the world’s best golfers, but that was hardly the case a year ago when McIlroy took advantage of favorable weather conditions to obliterate the defenseless course and field at […]
