TCA: The Grinder cast and creators talk fall’s funniest sitcom

The cast and creators of Fox’s sure-bet comedy The Grinder — starring Fred Savage and Rob Lowe as sparring brothers, the former an attorney and the latter who just played one on TV — took questions from reporters yesterday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The session was heavy on light-hearted quips about Lowe’s looks — including a bonus moment when the former teen heartthrob was asked if he and network mate John Stamos ever got together to “talk about their handsomeness.” Watching the proceedings unseen from the back of the room, Stamos called out, “Rob! Tell the truth — we’ve […]

TCA: Kermit and Miss Piggy talk break-up, new ABC series “The Muppets.”

ABC presented a panel on its anticipated new series The Muppets yesterday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, letting the show’s EPs Bill Prady and Bob Kushell and stars Kermit the Frog and a tardy Miss Piggy entertain reporters for a lively half hour. Kushell noted that, while many Muppets favorites will appear in the ABC primetime comedy, the show is a sort of running mockumentary about the behind-the-scenes action at Miss Piggy’s (fictional) talk show and not a reboot of the beloved variety fest The Muppet Show of the ’70s and early ’80s. “Anybody who hasn’t seen […]

Playing House Returns For Season 2: New Laughs & A New Way To Watch

The sun rose with an even sunnier glow this morning; because America’s most hilarious TV show is back tonight! I will say this with a complete lack of bias, but Playing House is the best comedy currently on TV … and possibly ever. Of course, I’ve written several times about my love for Playing House, including an impassioned plea for the show’s renewal, and thankfully, the Gods (and the decision-makers at USA Network) listened. Season 2 of the series — written by, produced by and starring real-life best friends Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair — finds childhood besties Maggie and […]

IFC Documentary Now!

IFC’s “Documentary Now!” is history as it never was

As Comedy Central’s Drunk History revolutionized the way we look at the past, IFC’s Documentary Now! (Thursdays beginning Aug. 20) hopes to alter how we remember some of history’s most important documentary films. Former Saturday Night Live castmates Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers are the creators of this new six-part comedy series that spoofs famous documentaries like Grey Gardens, Nanook of the North and Reportero. Each installment has the appearance and tone of a serious documentary (they even got Helen Mirren to introduce each episode!). But the seriousness ends when Armisen and Hader appear onscreen as parodies of eccentric […]

“Blunt Talk” releases the full comic force of Sir Patrick Stewart

Whether he’s on the bridge of the USS Enterprise as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, leading heroic mutants as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, or performing on the classical stage, Sir Patrick Stewart is an imposing presence, bringing gravitas and authority to his roles. Providing the voices of Stonecutter Number One on The Simpsons and CIA deputy director Avery Bullock on American Dad!, and guest-starring as a slightly off-kilter version of himself on Ricky Gervais’ Extras, Stewart proved he can take that gravitas and flip it on its head. Stewart makes his biggest flip […]

The nasty and delicious of Craig Robinson’s “Mr. Robinson”

It turns out that Craig Robinson’s (The Office) new NBC comedy has more in common with its star than just a name. In Mr. Robinson, Robinson plays a musician who substitute teaches a Chicago high-school music class to pay the bills. “I came up in Chicago, taught in Chicago, and I have a band named The Nasty Delicious,” Robinson says of the similarities between him and his character. “And of course I’ve got a crush on [costar] Meagan Good. That’s all real life.” The rest, Robinson says, is the imagination of writers and executive producers Mark and Robb Cullen. Mr. […]

Done with the “Daily” grind. Here’s when to watch Jon Stewart’s last Daily Show

What will we do without Jonnie Stew? The Daily Show Daily Show Full Episodes,  More Daily Show Videos,  Comedy Central Full Episodes   Sure, I thought the same of Stephen Colbert and The Colbert Report back in December, but my mourning was tempered with the understanding that I’m getting Stephen back next month in Letterman’s place. Jon … well, I don’t know. And that stings. Yes, The Daily Show will go on. But not The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Because I’m a print journalist who still believes hard in the medium, I get my daily news from a handful […]
