TV reunions try to recapture that old magic

Tonight’s episode of Happily Divorced will reunite Fran Drescher with her Nanny costar Renee Taylor, and it was recently announced that the show’s first-season finale will feature a guest spot from another Nanny alum, Charles Shaughnessy. It got us thinking about other TV reunions that have come and gone, and how getting old costars together in a new setting is often just used for a quick sight gag — and, of course, a nice ratings bump. But then there are other times when it’s a full-fledged new venture. Take Drescher and Shaughnessy, for instance, who also reunited full-time for the comedienne’s […]

TCA Summer Press Tour: What’s wrong with being sexy?

Monday was the first of two days of NBC Universal networks panels at the TCA Press Tour. The day started with Community star and The Soup host Joel McHale delivering a standup act (somewhat awkwardly reading from a teleprompter) that playfully ribbed NBC, its shows and the journalists in attendance. He called TCA “summer camp for shut-ins” and said that NBC’s strategy is to simply wait for CBS and ABC viewers to die. Not far from the truth on both points. Then followed an executive session with new NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt laying out his programming strategy and hopes […]

Simon Bird Drops In For “Friday Night Dinner.”

Some comedy aficionados in America may recognize actor Simon Bird as awkward teen Will McKenzie on The Inbetweeners, which just finished a third season on BBC America. Bird earned two British Comedy Awards and was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for that series. But recognition comes with the price of people shouting “briefcase wanker!” at him on the street. “I still get that. I got it earlier today,” Bird tells us. Fans of Inbetweeners definitely need to see Bird in BBC America‘s new comedy, Friday Night Dinner, which premieres July 30. The series is centered around a Jewish family […]

Dice Shakes Up The Final Season Of “Entourage”

Hard to believe the show that gave us “hug it out” and made us forget Aquaman and Medellin weren’t real movies is coming to an end. During its seven seasons, HBO‘s Entourage effectively blurred Hollywood and reality. So it’s fitting that a crazy “real Hollywood story” would lead to legendary comedian Andrew Dice Clay landing a regular role in the eighth and final season, premiering July 24. Long story short, a lien that an ex-wife put on a house Clay was trying to sell led to a gambling binge in Vegas (“I lived the movie The Hangover for like four […]

“Entourage” breaks up after eight great years

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide Sometimes it’s really tough to say farewell to one of your favorite shows, and other times you come to grips with the fact that the end is near. I’m in the latter category regarding the HBO hit Entourage. That’s not intended as a jab at the show or the actors, mind you. I’d gladly watch another five years if it ran that long, but I also appreciate what a luxury it is to last eight seasons in today’s schizophrenic TV climate. So when I tune in Sunday night (10:30pm ET) for the season premiere, it […]

Lisa Kudrow’s “Web Therapy” takes a ludicrous idea to hilarious extremes

If you’re looking for proof that Lisa Kudrow is nowhere near as dopey as her character Phoebe was on Friends, look no further than her latest project, Web Therapy, which premiered on Showtime last night and airs Tuesdays at 11pm ET/PT. The improv-heavy series features Kudrow along with a rotating cast including Jane Lynch, Bob Balaban, Victor Garber, Lily Tomlin, Alan Cumming, former Friends costar Courteney Cox and others, and presents an insightful, witty sendup of the unregulated world of online business. In the series, Kudrow plays Fiona Wallice, a clever, attractive woman whose brilliant new idea is to administer […]
