“South Park” takes aim at Royal Wedding

By Tom Comi Nobody is better than taking shots at people who take themselves too seriously than Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and tonight they use their show South Park to unload on the recent Royal Wedding. Entitled “Royal Pudding” and airing at 10pm ET on Comedy Central, the episode revolves around the nuptials between the prince of Canada and his soon-to-be princess.

Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter stage a “Family” reunion on “Dan Vs.”

Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter have been seeing quite a lot of each other lately. The Family Ties stars, who spent seven seasons playing liberal Ohio parents Steven and Elyse Keaton on the NBC sitcom, got together on The Oprah Winfrey Show in March when Baxter was promoting her revealing new autobiography, Untied. The following month, they took part in a reunion with costars Michael J. Fox, Justine Bateman and Tina Yothers at the TV Land Awards. Now, the duo is working together again creatively in a pair of episodes of The Hub’s animated comedy Dan Vs., playing — surprise, […]

“30 Rock” needs to find new direction

By Tom Comi Tonight marks the season finale for 30 Rock on NBC (10pm ET), and it’s too late to undo what has been a somewhat lackluster year. But this could be a pivotal point for the show moving forward, especially if it has any intentions of being around for a significant length of stay. 30 Rock is one of those shows that is critically acclaimed but viewer-challenged. It tries to be way too smart for its own good, and that ends up turning off a lot of potential fans. And one need look no further than the former Fox […]

Osama bin Laden’s DVR foreshadows his death

By Tom Comi After 10 years of searching for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by various agencies, many Americans had probably given up hope that he would ever be captured. But a lot can be determined by looking at a person’s TV-viewing habits, and the recently discovered DVR found at bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan suggests he knew the end was near. Channel Guide Magazine was able to obtain the DVR through top-secret sources*, and it turns out that the world’s most wanted man was quite the fan of American television. Here are some of the shows that he had […]

VOD Spotlight: “The Dilemma”

By Karl J. Paloucek Some situations are so uncomfortable and ugly, it’s hard to find any levity in them whatsoever. And sometimes, the best thing that can happen to such a circumstance is to exploit it for comedic value. That, in essence, is what Ron Howard has done in his film The Dilemma, starring Vince Vaughn, Kevin James and Winona Ryder. At the heart of the film is the longtime friendship of Ronny (Vaughn) and Nick (James), two entrepreneurs working on a dream of pitching their idea for an electric muscle car to the Chrysler Corporation. (Queen Latifah has a […]

A viewer’s guide to non-wedding programming

For those of you who will for one reason or another be up at 4 am ET tomorrow with no desire whatsoever to watch the Royal wedding, we here at Channel Guide Magazine have you covered. For every network that is covering the over-hyped vows, there are countless others that are offering a potpourri of programming choices. With that in mind, here is what we are officially deeming our “Un-Royal Best Bets,” which is subjective at best when you consider that all of these shows are airing just after midnight on the West Coast and shortly before sunrise on the […]

That’s What She Said: A farewell tribute to Michael Scott

On Thursday, Steve Carell appears in his final episode of NBC’s The Office as his character, Michael Scott, leaves Scranton for Colorado and a new life with fiancee Holly. The special extended episode “Goodbye Michael” airs at 9pm ET. We’ve come to love Michael Scotch Scott over seven seasons of the show (OK, the last two seasons were kind of iffy), and our office’s Office fans compiled our favorite Michael moments. We’ve even reunited our old Office blogging team of Ryan, Mike and johnnysweeptheleg (the renowned @BtotheD), who recapped episodes on this blog for a few seasons. Andrea Verschage (Product […]

Reiser saves face with “Tonight Show” appearance

By Tom Comi Nothing can be more embarrassing to an actor than having a show canceled after only two episodes, and nobody knows that better than Paul Reiser, after the sitcom bearing his name was yanked off the air last week by NBC. In what could have been a salt-in-the wound moment Monday, Reiser was booked to appear on NBC’s The Tonight Show before The Paul Reiser Show was given the hook. But being the subtle comedian he is, Reiser turned the appearance into one of the funnier segments we have seen in a long time on late-night television.

Martha Plimpton shares the joy of working on “Raising Hope”

Martha Plimpton has been working in the entertainment industry for 30 of her 40 years, wracking up fans with parts in audience favorites The Goonies and Parenthood, but it wasn’t until Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl) approached her with the role of Virginia Chance that she decided to take the plunge into TV. Raising Hope, which returns on FOX tonight, cast her as the head of a rough-around-the-edges family trying to raise a baby. Virginia is a headstrong but sweet mother to Jimmy (played by newcomer Lucas Neff), who also must look after her senile grandmother Maw Maw (Cloris […]

“Raising Hope” brings hope to TV viewers

By Tom Comi Sometimes the shows you think might resonate the least with you end up resonating the most, and that has certainly been the case with me in terms of FOX’s out-there comedy Raising Hope. And why would any reasonable person expect to connect with a show that revolves around a young man (Jimmy, played by Lucas Neff) who impregnated a criminal who was tried and executed by the state shortly after delivering his baby (Hope). All of this took place in the pilot last year, thereby setting the stage for Jimmy to raise the daughter with the help […]
