“Chasing UFOs” looks to explain the unexplained

So all the grainy, out-of-focus home-video footage on TV newsmagazine shows still hasn’t convinced you that UFOs are real? Maybe the crack team of investigators in National Geographic Channel’s new series Chasing UFOs (Friday, June 29, at 9pm ET/PT) might make you a firm believer or an unswaying skeptic. Lead researcher, tech guru and globetrotter Erin Ryder is an expert in using thermal cameras and night-vision equipment. Geologist, field explorer and radiation scientist Ben McGee — who actually has suborbital scientist-astronaut training — has an academic approach to UFO investigating. And “UFOlogist” James Fox is a documentary producer who claims […]

Nik Wallenda’s next stunt: “Danger by Design” for Science

I shouldn’t say the word “accident,” but it isn’t one that Nik Wallenda chose last Friday to attempt his tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. Seventh-generation descendent of the famous Flying Wallenda family, Nik’s timing couldn’t have been more auspicious, given that he and his family premiere a new series for Science tonight, June 18, at 9pm ET/PT. Danger by Design takes viewers inside the world of the Wallendas and the business they’ve chosen, dissecting the incredibly meticulous preparations Nik and his family undergo in advance of each of his death-defying stunts. “People ask me all the time — ‘Why do […]

“One Nation Under Dog” chronicles our complicated relationship with canines

As anyone who has ever owned a dog knows, as rewarding and loving as that relationship can be, it isn’t always as fuzzy and idyllic as what is portrayed on a greeting card or in one of those Disney Buddies movies — for either the owner or the dog. Most friendships and relationships encounter bumps, hard truths, friction and dark times as they run their course, and the partnerships between humans and canines have been no different over the centuries. Tonight, a new HBO documentary film called One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal, looks at several […]

ID’s “Evil, I” traces deadly deeds from the eyes of killers

Investigation Discovery has to be one of the bloodiest networks on television. (Aside from History back in its all-Hitler, all-the-time days, of course.) But it’s one of those networks that, because of the evil at the epicenter of so much of its programming, we find intrinsically fascinating. Tonight, one of the most evil-imbued — and therefore potentially tantalizing — programs to surface on ID premieres. Evil, I debuts with back-to-back episodes at 10pm and 10:30pm, and seeks to plumb the depths of the murderer’s mind, retracing actual serial killings from a first-person perspective. Each episode of Evil, I employs interviews […]

NBA TV presents “The Dream Team” documentary

NBA TV presents “The Dream Team,” a documentary about the 1992 USA Olympic basketball team, on Wednesday, June 13. It’s hard believe it’s been 20 years since the 1992 USA Olympic basketball “Dream Team” — probably still the greatest single team of athletes ever assembled — won gold at the Barcelona Games. It’s even harder to believe there was a time when the greatest basketball players in the world weren’t eligible for Olympic competition, since the U.S. couldn’t field pro players while other countries could. While the USA was dominant for years fielding teams with college kids, the rules changed […]

NGC re-airs Henry Hill “Locked Up Abroad” episode tonight

Henry Hill, the inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s classic 1990 movie Goodfellas (where he was played by Ray Liotta), and the nonfiction book from which the film was drawn, Nicholas Pileggi’s Wiseguys, passed away Tuesday at the age of 69. Last summer, National Geographic Channel debuted an episode of its popular Locked Up Abroad series devoted to Hill, called “The Real Goodfella,” which told the complete story of his rise and fall in the New York mob, including details of his life not featured in Scorsese’s film. NGC will be re-airing that episode tonight and next Wednesday. In the episode, Hill, […]

A new trip “Through the Wormhole With Morgan Freeman”

“Through the Wormhole With Morgan Freeman” returns to SCIENCE on Wednesday, June 6, seeking answers to the question: “Is There a Superior Race?” Few would expect that since I studied literature in college and now write mostly about sports for a living, that I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to my TV viewing. I’m fascinated by astronomy and astrophysics shows. My DVR is loaded with stuff like History’s The Universe, National Geographic Channel’s Journey to the Edge of the Universe and Discovery Channel’s Into the Universe With Stephen Hawking (and yes, I’ll be watching Stephen Hawking’s […]

Discovery to show off “Stephen Hawking’s Grand Design”

Likely ever since humans have been walking upright on this planet, people have been asking the question of why we’re here, and whether or not there’s a meaning to our existence. Over the eons — and particularly in the last few centuries — we’ve accreted vast amounts of knowledge about who we are and where we are in the universe, but we’re still asking many of the same basic questions: What are we humans, really? Why does the universe, with all of its incomprehensible forces, seem to be balanced just so to allow life to exist? Professor Stephen Hawking draws […]

Discovery Channel’s “Fast n’ Loud” ready to peel off the line

Most of us have at some point or other driven past a garage or farm where, somewhere on the premises, a neglected, rusted-out old car sits. Usually we’ll think to ourselves, “That must have been a great car back in its day,” or maybe, “Would be nice if they’d restore it, or if at least someone would.” Well, someone is out there, and they’re coming to Discovery Channel in a new car restoration series, Fast n’ Loud, premiering Wednesday, June 6 at 10pm ET/PT. Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufmann, the two gents at the center of Fast n’ Loud, are […]
