HBO airs documentary on DADT as controversial law is repealed

Tonight at midnight ET/PT (early morning of Tuesday, Sept. 20) — at the exact moment that the repeal of the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law takes effect — HBO will be offering a sneak preview of its new documentary The Strange History of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. It’s the strange-but-true story of the U.S. military’s ban on gays and lesbians, from its implementation, through passionate protests and debates, and finally to its 2011 repeal as of tomorrow — after 17 years, three presidencies and the discharge of 13,368 active service members under the law. After this preview, the 90-minute […]

Appropriately, the hosts for each event were chosen for their special connections to either the productions or to the cities from which they originate. Air travel and 9/11 … are some networks taking advantage?

by Karl J. Paloucek Follow @ChannelGuide I’ve been accused of a number of things in my lifetime, and if there’s one thing I have to cop to, it’s confusing people at times as to whether I’m serious or joking. In truth, sometimes I’m not even sure. Sometimes a topic has sufficient irony to lend itself to being oddly humorous and at the same time, it might not be appropriately timed for humor. I’m not even sure that what I want to discuss here is one of those topics, but consider yourselves forewarned — I feel like it’s gonna be one […]

Preview: Syfy’s “Paranormal Witness”

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP I screened the first episode of Syfy’s new docu-drama series Paranormal Witness (premiering tonight at 10pm ET/PT) yesterday afternoon, and while I felt some thrills and chills as I watched it, I didn’t think much about it afterward. This morning, however, I found myself awake at about 4:30 for some reason. As I lay in bed trying to get back to sleep, my mind suddenly went back to the screener I had watched, and the two (supposedly real-life) ghost stories contained within it. My brain is sometimes prone to do this after I watch a […]

Discovery Channel’s “Dinosaur Revolution” is a blast from the prehistoric past

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Notable dinosaur illustrators and animators have gotten together for the intriguing new Discovery Channel series Dinosaur Revolution that, in the previews I saw, managed to recall for me the best dino-thrills and emotions that I also found in everything from the Walking With Dinosaurs series to the The Land Before Time films and the “Rite of Spring” dinosaur sequence in Disney’s Fantasia. Almost narration-free, the series presents CG-animated vignettes depicting life for various dinosaurs, using the latest theories of how we believe these animals behaved.

History to present “Targeting bin Laden”

With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks nearly upon us, a lot of recent history is being revisited. The slaying of Osama bin Laden after a rigorous 10-year search brought the events of 9/11 full circle, reopening old wounds for some, bringing closure to others and leading many Americans to wonder: How did we get bin Laden? Sept. 6, History will present Targeting bin Laden, a two-hour special exploring the effort it took over two administrations to bring the goal of the CIA’s most wanted within reach and how the mission was carried out. Using historical footage, photos and […]

HBO to air “Paradise Lost” docs as West Memphis 3 freed

In response to the news that the “West Memphis Three” — Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelly and Jason Baldwin — had been freed after spending 18 years in prison for their conviction of the brutal slaying of three young boys, HBO announced it will re-air two documentaries that followed the case and shoved it into the national and, as it turns out, international spotlight. Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills airs Monday at 5pm, followed Tuesday by Paradise Lost 2: Revelations at 5:45. Both films are also currently available on HBO On Demand and HBO GO, the network’s […]

Weather Channel plans comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Irene

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP The Weather Channel has long found itself in the somewhat dubious position of seeing its broadcast and online ratings go up in times of severe storms and natural disasters, but it’s understandable why so many turn to them in time of need, since the network also has a long tradition of top-notch professional reporting that helps and informs viewers, particularly those in affected areas. Such will be the case now as Hurricane Irene progresses up the East Coast, with the potential to affect up to 55 million people. And already the network has ranked No. […]
