Bob Saget’s “Strange Days” at A&E

By Stacey Harrison As evidenced by his two very distinct public personas — some know him as the hugs-and-kisses dad on Full House, others as a particularly lewd standup comic — Bob Saget likes to play with expectations. So instead of trotting out yet another reality show that follows around a celebrity in his personal life, Saget decided to forge a new path with his new series Strange Days with Bob Saget, which airs Tuesdays on A&E. In what he likes to call a “comedy-documentary,” he explores subcultures and experiences that have always intrigued him, from camping out with Bigfoot […]

Into Africa: Day Eight: Heading Home

Friday, September 17 AMSTERDAM – Now that I am out of Africa, the only negative was the airport. I had a little trouble getting out, as I did getting in. Some people had to have their fingerprints scanned, and mine were done twice. Then the official took an image of my retina. He asked questions, looked me up on a computer, and I knew to keep my natural sarcasm and outrage under wraps.

“Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the New York Jets” premieres Aug. 11 on HBO

To say that there’s buzz about the New York Jets is an understatement. No, that buzz is more like the deafening roar of a Boeing going throttle-open down the LaGuardia runway. The Jets are coming off a loss to Indianapolis in the AFC Championship, and they’re a popular preseason favorite to win the AFC — if not more — this season. Their confident and colorful head coach, Rex Ryan, has the Jets throwing their weight around the league (though Ryan lost weight himself, thanks to offseason lap-band surgery). Their quarterback, Mark Sanchez, enters his second season and is already an […]

Jeff VanVonderen talks about the return of A&E’s “Intervention”

By Stacey Harrison Back in 2005, when Jeff VanVonderen agreed to take part in a documentary series that would chronicle interventions for addicts, he did so hoping to raise awareness about a method of treatment many people did not know was an option. It’s succeeded far beyond what he or anyone else could have imagined, as Intervention has lasted over 100 episodes and returns for its ninth season on A&E June 28. I caught up with VanVonderen recently to talk about his history with the show, how it’s helped people, and why so many of the addicts featured are still […]

Swimming through the “Jaws” saga

Just when you thought there was nothing new to learn about Jaws, The Bio Channel brings forth a new documentary that takes a deeper look at the movie that many say created the summer blockbuster as we know it. Just in time for the film’s 35th anniversary, Jaws: The Inside Story premieres tonight and features new interviews many of the cast and crew, including director Steven Spielberg and star Richard Dreyfuss. Color me excited. I wasn’t old enough to catch Jaws in the theater, but I knew that it scared my parents, and that was good enough for me. Then […]

TCM’s Eastwood movie marathon and new doc celebrate Clint’s 80th birthday
