“American Horror Story: Coven” teaser trailer gets witchy … or does it?

Another fall TV season, another batch of creepy abstract teasers for American Horror Story. This initial 17-second clip for American Horror Story: Coven reveals nothing at all about the storyline, which we know is going to be centered around witches in New Orleans. The opening line of “House of the Rising Sun” — the one about there being a house in New Orleans — is the only reference to the setting. Otherwise all we see is a white room where a small white cat walks toward the camera before we pan to a much more arresting visual, seven women — […]

The Newsroom Season 2 Episode 4 recap: “Unintended Consequences”

If you’ll remember last week on HBO’s The Newsroom, tumblers clicked on the initially tenuous but potentially big investigation into Operation Genoa, revealed to be the alleged use by the U.S. military of banned sarin gas during a cross-border mission in Pakistan; cops were cavalierly beating the hell out of a nascent rising of anticorporate leftists called Occupy Wall Street; and, as importantly, crazy News Night associate producer and ostensible staff darling Maggie (Alison Pill) was going crazier after breaking up with both Don and Jim (John Gallagher Jr.). No matter that, in the latter case, she and Jim were […]

Vince Gilligan On The End Of “Breaking Bad” And New Beginnings

In the fall of 2007, I flew to Albuquerque to spend a glorious day with showrunner Vince Gilligan and the cast of Breaking Bad as they filmed Season 1 and wondered what would happen to their daring little series as the writers strike loomed. Five seasons, six years, seven primetime Emmys and countless other accolades later, Gilligan is on the phone chuckling indulgently as I pose overwrought theories about the fate of Walter White and Co. on the eve of Bad’s last eight episodes. For example: about his long-ago promise to turn his lead from Mr. Chips into Scarface culminating […]

“The White Queen”: Starz’s epic drama could make a star out of Rebecca Ferguson

In The White Queen, young woman is plucked from obscurity and suddenly thrust into the biggest spotlight possible. Now the center of attention for an entire nation, she must navigate her way through an entirely new level of existence, hoping the lofty social structure she finds herself in doesn’t swallow her soul. This describes Elizabeth Woodville, the title character of Starz’s handsome 10-part period drama based on the novel by Philippa Gregory (The Other Boleyn Girl), but it could also on some level describe the actress who plays her, Rebecca Ferguson. The 29-year-old actress has mainly worked in smaller projects and […]

TCA: CW wants to expand upon DC universe, may spin off Flash series from “Arrow”

At The CW executive panel this morning, network president Mark Pedowitz addressed the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer 2013 Press Tour gathering. Among the things he talked about was how the upcoming season of The CW’s hit series Arrow will feature an origin story for Barry Allen — better known to comic book fans as The Flash. If this storyline goes well with viewers, Pedowitz suggested there may be a Flash spinoff series. “We plan to introduce a reoccurring character and an origin story of Dr. Barry Allen, who you now know is The Flash,” said Pedowitz. “… [W]e’re planning […]

TCA: CBS renews “Under the Dome”; Stephen King to write Season 2 premiere

At the CBS executive session this morning at the Television Critics Association (TCA) 2013 Summer Press Tour, CBS president and CEO Les Moonves — making his first appearance at TCA in many years as a fill-in for CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, who had to return home for a personal situation — announced that CBS has renewed its hit Under the Dome, with the 13-episode Season 2 airing next summer. Additionally, it was announced that author Stephen King, on whose novel the series is based, will be writing the Season 2 premiere episode. Moonves was disappointed that Tassler could not […]

The Newsroom Season 2 Episode 3 recap: Willie Pete

The Newsroom season 2 episode 3 kicked off creeping stealthily toward a rabbit hole of creator Aaron Sorkin’s favorite hobby, flagellant landmines-of-misunderstanding-ravaged love. In case you missed the half of last season wholly devoted to that hobby, Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), News Night anchor, left a voicemail for his executive producer and ex Mackenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) after the big we-got-Bin Laden broadcast, when he went on-air stoned and she talked him through it – but left it for the wrong person, gossip-chanteuse Nina Howard. Now, Will and Mackenzie tussle playfully over what might have he might’ve said after, “I’m […]

“Under the Dome”: Jolene Purdy talks about Dodee, playing in Stephen King’s world

Under the Dome has been a massive hit for CBS this summer, with its Stephen King-inspired storyline having millions of viewers asking just what they would do if they found themselves in a town suddenly, inexplicably, cut off from society. And Jolene Purdy couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. As Dodee Weaver, the resident tech geek at Chester’s Mill’s lone remaining operational radio station, she helps make sure the residents have a link to each other and the outside world. “Oh my gosh, it’s so exciting,” Purdy says. “This is the first time I’ve let myself get […]
