BBC America’s “An Adventure in Space and Time” to explore how Doctor Who series was created

As part of BBC America’s celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary British sci-fi series Doctor Who this year, the network has announced that it will co-produce and premiere a drama called An Adventure in Space and Time, to debut later in 2013. It will tell the story of the genesis of Doctor Who — which first aired Nov. 23, 1963 — and the many personalities involved with its creation and production. Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who) is writing the drama, and co-executive producing along with Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Sherlock) and Caroline Skinner (Doctor Who). David Bradley […]

FX’s “The Americans” serves up a Cold War dish of intrigue

There’s a temptation to look back fondly on the Cold War, if for no other reason than that the line between good and evil was clearly drawn: the U.S. hated the Soviet Union and vice versa. But in The Americans — premiering tonight at 10 on FX — that line is muddled, both for the characters and the audience. The time is 1981, and Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) seem like the all-American couple, running a travel agency and raising their two children in suburban Virginia. But what their neighbors — and even their children — don’t know […]

Noted actors explore The Bard in “Shakespeare Uncovered” on PBS

“We have such a disadvantage with Shakespeare,” says actor and one host of the new PBS series Shakespeare Uncovered Jeremy Irons, “because everybody teaches it badly at school, and so you leave school — like the French leave school, and they never want to hear about Proust again. The Americans and the English, if they are lucky, they get taught a bit of Shakespeare. They probably see a bad production, and they think, ‘Right. Fine. School is over. Shakespeare, thank you very much. That’s the end of you for my life.’  And so we — I mean, as an actor, […]

Betty and Coretta premieres Feb. 2 on Lifetime

Angela Bassett is Hollywood’s go-to actress for critically heralded performances as women with steely backbones and tender hearts — most notably American history-makers Rosa Parks, Tina Turner and Dr. Betty Shabazz, widow of Malcolm X. But after more than 25 years in the business, the Oscar-nominated star had yet to play Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow Coretta Scott King, who expanded his message of nonviolence and equality to a global audience until her death in 2006. Bassett finally got her chance. This month, she stars as Mrs. King opposite Mary J. Blige’s Dr. Shabazz in the Lifetime original movie Betty […]

Do No Harm premiere date set, star Stephen Pasquale on alter egos

NBC is giving its new drama a powerful lead-in, as the Do No Harm premiere date is scheduled immediately following the hourlong series finale of 30 Rock on Thursday, Jan. 31. The dark Jekyll and Hyde-esque medical drama has Stephen Pasquale (Rescue Me) playing both Dr. Jason Cole, a highly respected neurosurgeon, and his alter ego Ian Price, a reckless playboy determined to ruin Jason’s life. While we’ve seen alter egos play out in film and serialized TV before (of recent, Toni Collette in Showtime’s United States of Tara comes to mind), Do No Harm offers a refreshingly dark twist […]

“Spartacus: War of the Damned” brings Starz’s strange, sad saga to a close

The strange saga of Spartacus — both the epic battles portrayed onscreen and the upheaval and tragedies off it — comes to a close with a third and final season beginning Friday on Starz. Spartacus: War of the Damned (which several cast members say is a wholly appropriate title) follows the former gladiator as he leads a growing slave rebellion against the Roman Empire. As history points out, the Romans resorted to sending out famed General Crassus to once and for all quash the revolt, making it Spartacus’ last stand. Liam McIntyre returns as Spartacus, and says viewers will notice […]

“American Horror Story” officially has a problem with endings

WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILER ALERTS!!!! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, what the hell’s wrong with you, American Horror Story? Tonight’s Season 2 finale, “Madness Ends,” which airs at 10pm on FX, has me feeling some familiar frustrations. Last season I willfully and gladly went along with the big ball of crazy that befell the Harmon family, not caring that the rules were established, then seemingly broken at will. Just what the heck ghosts were capable of, anyway? I thought they couldn’t leave the house, but then I see one riding in the back of a squad car? […]

Jamie Bamber is surgically suave in TNT’s “Monday Mornings”

Jamie Bamber is making good progress completing the leading-man checklist. Hotshot pilot? Check. (Apollo on Battlestar Galactica) Hotshot cop? Check. (Matt Devlin on Law & Order: UK) Hotshot doctor? Well, that’s where Tyler Wilson on Monday Mornings comes in. The chisel-jawed Brit plays the brilliant but tormented neurosurgeon at the head of David E. Kelley’s new medical drama — premiering at 10pm Feb. 4 on TNT — which is based on a novel by real-life neurosurgeon (and CNN staple) Dr. Sanjay Gupta. It’s a step up in prominence from his parts on other ensemble shows, this time shouldering much of […]
