“The Newsroom” episode 9 recap: Tea (Party) for 2(.0)

MacKenzie McHale, executive producer of News Night dealing with a blackout that has shut down power to the Atlantis Cable News studios, drops this week’s Capra Moment™ early to muster the troops for a remote broadcast. They have been battered and grumbly in Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom because so-called News Night 2.0 has been compromising its 2.0ness because news consumers have been demanding Casey Anthony murder trial coverage even though Tea Party suicide bombers are playing chicken with the U.S. debt ceiling. But the blackout can bring them all together, McHale says, because they are plucky professionals with skills. “I […]

Tom Weston-Jones leads BBC America’s “Copper”

The folks at BBC America have a solid reputation for delivering some of the best in British comedy and drama. It’s taken them a while to finally get into the original drama game, but from the looks of it, they’re starting off on the right foot. The 10-part series Copper takes viewers to 1860s New York City, to the world of Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones, MI-5), a rough Irish-American policeman working the notorious Five Points neighborhood. Having returned from the Civil War to find his daughter dead and his wife missing, Corcoran is driven to divine their fate, even as […]

Sanaa Lathan on Season 2 of Starz’s “Boss”

It’s a good deal more frantic and there are more people milling about than when I last visited the set of Starz‘s Boss. Mario Van Peebles is in the director’s chair, and neither Kelsey Grammer nor Troy Garity are anywhere to be seen. The focus of the scene being shot at the moment is Sanaa Lathan, as she does take after take of showing disgust at some as-yet-unknown plot turn playing out on a phantom television, turning around and exiting in search of a drink. Lathan is a newcomer to the acclaimed series this season, playing Mona Fredericks, a woman whom […]

History re-airing “Hatfields and McCoys” this week

History will be re-airing its acclaimed, Emmy-nominated miniseries Hatfields & McCoys this week, perhaps as a buildup to some hype for the primetime Emmy awards next month. And there certainly is plenty of Emmy buzz surrounding this six-hour series. When the nominations were announced in July, Hatfields & McCoys came away with 16 — the most in the network’s history. Notable nominations include Outstanding Miniseries or a Movie; Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie (Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton); Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie (Tom Berenger); Outstanding Supporting Actress in A Miniseries or a […]

“The Newsroom” recap: The Blackout, Part One: Tragedy Porn

In case you haven’t been following Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, here’s some backstory: America put itself in the hands of corporate charlatans who lied a lot about everything to justify sociopathic behavior, and enough people thought that was OK because institutions they count on to be watchdogs of bad intentions, lying and horrible outcomes stopped watchdogging after being consolidated into media conglomerates who prioritize the will of advertisers who much prefer a citizenry stupid enough to be advertised to. That established, Olivia Munn, who plays Sloan on The Newsroom, needs to be better at what people supposedly do on HBO […]

“The Closer” series finale: A fan’s reaction

After seven seasons, TNT’s drama The Closer comes to an end tonight, Aug. 13, airing its final episode at 9pm ET/PT (followed by the series premiere of the spinoff program Major Crimes). In a testament to just how strong a fanbase it has, The Closer recently broke the Guinness World Record  for “Most Contributions to a Greeting Card” — more than 17,000 fans have signed a digital greeting card expressing what the show has meant to them, and at a special Hollywood screening for some fans last week, a record-breaking total of hand-written contributions — now standing at 1,970 — […]

“Longmire” author Craig Johnson reflects on 1st season of the A&E hit based on his books

As the first season of Longmire comes to a close this Sunday at 10pm on A&E, Craig Johnson has watched — along with an average of more than 4 million other viewers per week — the characters he created in a series of mystery novels come to life. While he was initially leery about turning over the reins to his rugged, Wyoming-set stories to Hollywood, he says he couldn’t be more pleased with how this adaptation has turned out. I had a lively chat with Johnson as Longmire was about to premiere and he spoke about the unlikely way his […]

Keri Russell plays a KGB spy in FX’s upcoming Cold War drama, “The Americans”

In The Americans, slated to premiere early next year on FX, two KGB spies pose as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., shortly after Ronald Reagan becomes president. Keri Russell (Felicity) and Matthew Rhys star as Elizabeth and Phil Jennings, who have two children who know nothing about their parents’ true identity. Complicating matters is a new neighbor, played by Noah Emmerich, who also happens to be an FBI agent working counter intelligence. FX released some photos from the series, which was created by Joe Weisberg and executive produced by Graham Yost (Justified).     Photos: (top) Credit: Craig Blankenhorn; (bottom […]
