New “Dallas” video updates us on the Ewing saga

TNT released this behind the scenes video clip today in advance of its updated return of the drama Dallas next week, June 13, at 9pm ET/PT. In the clip we see a nice recap of the colorful history of the famous Ewing clan, and get caught up with what’s been happening in the 20 years since we’ve last seen them in case you’ve forgotten (or in case you weren’t even born when Dallas was originally in its heyday). There’s a look at the initial rivalry between the Ewing and Barnes families, which apparently continues to spill over into the new […]

Sutton Foster trades Broadway for “Bunheads”

Despite her staggering amount of success on Broadway — including two Tony awards and a decade-long run of starring roles in big shows — more people will likely watch Sutton Foster on one episode of her new TV show than have ever seen her on the Great White Way. The star of such stage hits as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes knows she’s stepping into a whole new world with Bunheads, an ABC Family drama — premiering at 9pm June 11 — about an aimless Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a love-struck fan and moves with him to […]

“Royal Pains” returns to USA just in time for summer

I had no idea until going through the press materials to write about the new season of Royal Pains that it ranks as USA Network’s No. 1 hit original series. Then it dawned on me that it makes complete sense. After all, the show has a unique premise, gorgeous scenery and one of the most underrated casts in all of television. For those unfamiliar with Royal Pains — which returns tonight at 9pm ET — it revolves around a concierge doctor who discretely treats the upper-crust residents living in the Hamptons. Mark Feuerstein stars as Dr. Hank Lawson,  a former New […]

“Longmire” debut shoots straight to top of A&E record books

With 4.1 million viewers watching its premiere Sunday night, A&E’s Longmire became cable’s top new scripted drama of the year, and the most watched original series in the network’s history. Based on the popular book series by Craig Johnson, Longmire follows the exploits of Walt Longmire, a middle-aged sheriff solving crimes — and trying to find purpose in his life — in Wyoming’s sparsely populated Absaroka County. Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase and Cassidy Freeman costar. Read our feature on Longmire here, and check back for an exclusive interview we did with author Craig Johnson.

“Franklin & Bash” deserves another chance

Sometimes when a verdict comes across as being too harsh, the next step is to appeal the decision with the hopes of getting a more desirable response. I have done that myself with the show Franklin & Bash, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the season 2 premiere brings tonight (10pm ET). I wrote a fairly harsh review of the TNT drama in this space last year, and I stand firmly by that criticism. I felt like the writers tried way too hard to be witty, and that oftentimes handcuffed some of the more serious legal story lines they were trying […]

VOD Spotlight: “Safe House” makes Denzel Washington a sociopath

In the Daniel Espinosa-directed thriller Safe House, Denzel Washington plays a former CIA operative gone traitor, a role that seems not all that far removed from his Academy Award-winning turn as corrupt cop Alonzo Harris from Training Day. But Tobin Frost is a different animal altogether, and Washington took a fresh approach to developing this character. To start with, he didn’t model his behavior based on anything to do with the CIA. “I didn’t want to do a lot of CIA research because Tobin Frost wasn’t CIA anymore,” Washington explains. “He hated everything about the CIA, and I wanted to […]

First official photo from Lifetime’s “Liz & Dick”

Lifetime released this first official photo from its original movie Liz & Dick, which started principal photography in Los Angeles today and will debut later this year on the network. The biopic stars Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and Grant Bowler as Richard Burton in a telling of the celebrity couple’s sometimes rocky romance. There was some controversy at the time of Lohan’s announcement as being cast in the part of Taylor. What do you think of the photo? ___________________ Credit: Richard McLaren/Lifetime

“Longmire” takes A&E viewers on a rough ride into the Western

There’s an old sheriff in town, and his name is Walt Longmire. Veteran character actor Robert Taylor — maybe you’d recognize him better wearing the suit and sunglasses he did in The Matrix; then again, maybe not — takes the lead in an absorbing adaptation of Craig Johnson’s acclaimed mystery series. Set on the rugged, unforgiving Wyoming frontier, Longmire follows the middle-aged, recently widowed sheriff of Absaroka County as he seeks to work through his pain and revitalize his life and career. Helping him along are a big-city transplant deputy, Vic (Katee Sackhoff), and his longtime friend Henry Standing Bear […]

TNT’s “Dallas” update is hotter than a Texas summer!

It is late in the afternoon on the final day of the two-week schmooze-a-palooza that is the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. Half of the assembled critics are nursing a nagging cold that has spread through the frigid, windowless conference rooms; no one has had enough sleep. And everyone — even those of us who would watch way too much TV even if we weren’t paid to do so — has had just about enough of talking about television. Then onto the stage walks Larry Hagman in a dashing white cowboy hat, followed by Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and […]

Nickelodeon poised to clean up with “Rags”

The world of pre-teen musical shows is a hard-driven one. And the rivalry between Nickelodeon and the Mouse for dominance in the genre is just relentless, as many parents of those pre-teens will tell you. Both keep at it and are showing no sign of letting up, in spite of the fact that the kids who made High School Musical the phenomenon it was are either in college or will be soon. The music keeps rolling on in both camps, from Nickelodeon’s Victorious and How to Rock to Disney Channel’s Lemonade Mouth. Now Nickelodeon attempts to up the ante once again with […]
