The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 5 Recap: Welcome Home, Brother

Boy oh boy. did this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries have a ton of information packed into one hour-long episode. Plus, they made sure to stick to the usual scenario by making something happy out of a sad event, endlessly toying with our emotions. To start off, Trip calls Stefan to thank him for Enzo. Stefan thought Enzo was already dead, but Trip lets him in on his little secret weapon idea. He tells Stefan that he wants to know everything that Enzo knows, but there can’t be that big of a vampire problem because Enzo would’ve talked by […]

Scoring the Scene on “Criminal Minds”

CBS’ hit Criminal Minds is one of the creepiest dramas on television. For the past decade, the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit has matched wits with entertainment’s most twisted unsubs “unknown subjects.” As the team profiles and hunts down the depraved and despicable villains, the action is set against the most riveting soundtrack on television. The show’s award-winning composers, brothers Steffan and Marc Fantini (along with composing partner Scott Gordon), create the disturbing music that sets the show’s dark mood. Marc and Steffan, what is your background in music? Marc: Our musical background started in recording: rock, pop and songwriting. My […]

The Flash recap: Captain Cold is introduced in “Going Rogue”

In last night’s episode of The Flash, titled “Going Rogue,” we finally get to see one of the “big bads” of the Flash mythos — Captain Cold (a.k.a. Leonard Snart), played very well by Wentworth Miller. Miller displayed the cool-under-pressure sinisterness of Captain Cold that fans of the villain’s appearance in comics and in animated versions should appreciate. The episode title is also likely a sly reference to The Rogues, a group of villains in the comics headed by Captain Cold who regularly tried to stop The Flash. The end of this episode also saw Captain Cold trying to recruit […]

Jane the Virgin Episode 3 Recap: Heartbreaker

We fell in love with Jane the Virgin knowing the backstory of how Jane’s Abuela told her the story of keeping her virginity until marriage. We saw the flower being crushed and how impossible it was to put it back to its original form. However, in this episode, Jane is turning the tables on everything. She’s realized that her one nightmare has come true: She’s unmarried and pregnant just like her mother was. She figures why wait any longer to have sex if she’s already pregnant and has a fiancé who has been waiting patiently. When Jane lets Michael in […]

Olive Kitteridge: HBO and Frances McDormand bring Elizabeth Strout bestseller to poignant life

Like many readers of Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2008 novel Olive Kitteridge, Frances McDormand fell in love with the character-rich examination of small-town secrets and happily shared it with her friends. One longtime pal called her soon after, wondering if McDormand would find a way to play the plainspoken Olive onscreen. McDormand said no, unwilling to dilute the power of Strout’s words. “For me, acting has always been just a social extension of my private reading life,” says the lifelong book collector, “so I was never interested in reading books to consider them as material to develop into other projects.” […]

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 4 recap: Family Ties

I have been waiting all week for this episode of The Vampire Diaries to see whether or not Elena and Stefan were going to rekindle the flame and get married. While I love Damon too, let’s face it he’s bad news for her. Tonight’s episode “Black Hole Sun” started off with Kai trying to pry out information from Damon. He asked exactly why they were stuck on a loop of May 10, 1994 thinking it had something to do with Damon’s past. It seems like Kai’s right because Damon doesn’t want to talk about what happened trapping him in this […]

The Flash recap: “Things You Can’t Outrun”

Episode 3 of The CW’s The Flash is titled “Things You Can’t Outrun,” and that applies both literally to Barry’s (Grant Gustin) troubles in outrunning a dangerous new metahuman villain, and also figuratively to various characters’ inability to outrun their pasts. The baddie for this week is Kyle Nimbus (guest star Anthony Carrigan), who has the ability to turn himself into poison gas (and, of course, resolidify himself afterward). Nimbus got this power as a death row inmate the night of the particle accelerator accident — as Nimbus was being put to death by gas, the accident that also created […]

Jane the Virgin Episode 2 Recap: Familia Loca

Continuing the real life telenovela of Jane’s life, this week’s episode of Jane the Virgin gets even more complicated. Just when you think you start to understand every character, you twist around the corner and are completely wrong. We’ll start things off slow from the beginning so we can get an overview of what’s happened. Jane sets up a family meeting with her mom, Abuela and fiancé Michael. She tells them that just because she’s in a sticky situation doesn’t mean she’s not going to finish accomplishing her dreams and goals. Way to go Jane! She’s going to be a […]
