Hub Network celebrates Friday the 13th with Spooky Googly Eyes Marathon

The Hub Network is getting a little goofy — er, googly, to celebrate Friday the 13th. The macabre calendar day will feature a marathon of episodes from Goosebumps and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, which seems natural enough, but they’ll be back with a twist. As part of the Spooky Googly Eyes Marathon, the episodes will feature characters (and creatures) who have had immense googly eyes added to their appearance. Here, maybe it’s just better if you take a look and see for yourself. The Friday the 13th Spooky Googly Eyes Marathon runs from 5pm-8pm ET tonight on The Hub […]

Preview: “Ghost Shark” on Syfy

For Syfy, this summer has been the Summer of Sharknado, with that particular original movie doing bang-up social media business, if not chewing up the ratings right away. There have since been a few re-airs of Sharknado that have picked up viewership, and a third re-air will take place this Thursday, Aug. 22, just ahead of the premiere of the network’s latest shark-themed original movie — Ghost Shark. As with Sharknado, Ghost Shark is about exactly what its self-explanatory title says it is about. The monstrous antagonist is, indeed, a ghost, and a shark. Specifically, it’s the ghost of a […]

True Blood Season 6 postmortem: What was good, what was bad, what’s next?

Whether it was just a matter of seeing a supernova-hot show cool to also-ran status, or a case of it jumping the shark (and biting it on the neck, draining it of all its vital blood) I couldn’t muster up much excitement for True Blood Season 6. I wasn’t alone, right? There really didn’t seem to be much buzz for the return of Sookie, Bill, Eric, Jason and all the weirdos in Bon Temps, not when winter is coming and all. The truth is, the show strayed far and often from its intriguing start of being about a psychic waitress […]

Official Sharknado 2 title announced

After soliciting Twitter submissions for the subtitle to its announced sequel to the surprise pop-culture hit Sharknado, Syfy said yesterday that the title will be: Sharknado 2: The Second One (they say they waded through over 5,000 Twitter submissions before deciding on this one). Thomas Vitale, executive vice president, programming and original movies at Syfy, said, “Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2. This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want […]

“Sharknado” blows again this Thursday on Syfy

Just as quickly as a real tornado can form and overtake its surroundings, so too did the social media storm that erupted around the Syfy Original Movie Sharknado last week. Somehow it ended up being a perfect storm that sucked in snarky Twitter commenters from all walks of life, although the movie’s title and premise really weren’t particularly unusual given their pedigree (really, was Sharknado any sillier than Mansquito or Sharktopus?). Perhaps Sharknado simply marked the point at which Syfy Original Movies broke through to a wider audience, even though they have been popular among their traditional young adult base for […]

VOD Spotlight: This “Mama” Is A Monster Of A Mother

Casting Mama’s title character was a critical decision for the filmmakers. Director Andy Muschietti had seen Javier Botet in the Spanish horror film [Rec] and recognized the actor as perfect for the part of the spectral creature who haunts the film. (No spoilers here, if you want to see how perfect Botet is for the part, you’ll have to see the movie!) Standing an astonishing 6 1/2 feet tall — with uncommon body features and physical abilities corresponding to his measurements — Botet moves delicately, deliberately and terrifyingly as Mama. Producer and screenwriter (and sister to the director) Barbara Muschietti […]

Erik Estrada is back on the bike in Syfy’s “Chupacabra vs The Alamo”

With a ridiculous title that sounds like it could have come straight from one of those 1960s Mexican wrestler-superhero-horror movies (like Samson vs. The Vampire Women, or Santo and Blue Demon vs. The Monsters), Syfy’s latest original movie, Chupacabra vs The Alamo, indeed offers a similar cheesy but fun Mexican/Southwestern pop-culture/horror flair, beyond its moniker. Again borrowing from the public domain/urban legend bestiary, Syfy this time uses as its title monster the chupacabra — a legendary beast that has been reported throughout Latin America and the American Southwest, and that has been said to have attacked and sucked the blood […]

The Walking Dead Live: Nicotero, Cohan, Reedus and Yeun enjoy fan love and beer in Milwaukee

This weekend, more than 2,500 fans crowded into Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater for a pair of Q&A sessions with The Walking Dead co-executive producer and special effects guru Greg Nicotero and stars Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Norman Reedus (Daryl). As slobbering uberfans of the record-breaking AMC hit, my husband and I scored seats at the 10pm show amid mohawks and zombie wannabes, grandmas and middle-aged couples who might have seemed more at home at the comedy shows, concerts and author chats more common to the venue. Plenty of audience members had clearly made liberal use of the numerous […]

The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun on Glenn’s changing role as the prison and Woodbury collide

When Glenn Rhee first appeared on The Walking Dead, he was a ball-cap-wearing smartass who put the encyclopedic knowledge of a city that only a pizza-delivery guy can claim to good use in getting his fellow survivors out of tough spots. Not that it earned him much respect. As the AMC hit drama’s third season returns Feb. 10, Glenn has evolved from a flaky kid into a purposeful, mentally and physically adept warrior thanks to the love of a good woman and the realization that he’s capable of so much more than scrambling through sewers. “I think it’s been an […]
