But don’t give up the ghost! Syfy has all your creepy needs ready to be fulfilled some more starting tonight with the return of its hit series Paranormal Witness, which airs its second season Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT starting tonight. FEARnet to add two-hour “Funhouse” weekend programming block

FEARnet — a multiplatform service dedicated to horror, suspense and thriller content currently available in more than 7 million American homes via its linear cable channel — is adding a new two-hour weekend programming block to that linear channel starting Saturday, Aug. 18, in which it will bring back a couple of animated favorites from the past, as well as air two live-action series — including one never seen before on U.S. airwaves. Dubbed “Funhouse,” the programming block is aimed at the Adult 18-34 demo, a group that other networks, notably Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, have found success with by […]

Barry Williams and Danny Bonaduce battle “Bigfoot” — and each other — in a Syfy original

It’s been kind of a ’70s flashback week here at Channel Guide. One of my compatriots, Lori, got to finally interview her teenage crush Leif Garrett, while I got to screen Syfy’s latest original movie, Bigfoot, which casts Barry Williams of The Brady Bunch and Danny Bonaduce of The Partridge Family. And in a way, the film somewhat resembles, in plot, anyway, one of those ’70s “nature strikes back” movies that had an environmental message. Of course, it’s filled with the usual Syfy cheese, too. Bigfoot takes place in Deadwood, South Dakota, where Bonaduce plays an obnoxious radio host (not […]

Episode lineup for Syfy’s 2012 “Twilight Zone” Fourth of July Marathon

The Twilight Zone may remain famous for its often-surprise endings, but at this point there is nothing surprising about the fact that Syfy’s annual 4th of July marathon airing of the classic series’ episodes has done well for the network. The popular programming event will return this Fourth of July, with 21 hours of Zone airing from 8am July 4 through 5am July 5 (times Eastern). Here is a rundown of the episodes airing during Syfy’s marathon: July 4 8am: “Probe 7 Over and Out” 8:30am: “Caesar and Me” 9am: “The Old Man in the Cave” 9:30am: “Mr. Dingle, the […]

Fracking spiders! Syfy unleashes “Arachnoquake”

If you remember the 1990 movie Arachnophobia, you might recall that it was (somewhat awkwardly) marketed as a “thrill-omedy,” trying to play up its effective combination of scares and laughs as it told the tale of a spider invasion of a small town. Syfy’s original movie Arachnoquake could be similarly billed as such, as it features thrills but less outright horror than most Saturday night movie titles the network has aired, and a lot more fun and humor, even down to the peppy, bouncy, and almost comic musical score that propels the action. The plot, of course, is ridiculous. A […]

Syfy’s got “School Spirits” — yes, they do!

The “paranormal” genre of programming — particularly, the type dealing with ghosts — has become crowded of late. Syfy’s Wednesday night programming in particular is haunted by this type of show. When Ghost Hunters is not on, as now, there are, in its place, shows like Haunted Collector, the upcoming Haunted Highway and, premiering tonight, School Spirits. School Spirits, however, tends to set itself apart from the pack in its effectiveness at setting scenes and delivering creepiness. It comes from producer Mark Burnett, the ubiquitous mind behind everything from Survivor to The Voice, and Seth Jarrett and Julie Insogna Jarrett, […]

“Piranhaconda” continues Syfy’s June original movie premieres

If you think watching a completed Syfy original movie is a trip, try checking one out that features unfinished special effects, sound and music! That was my experience with watching a preview screener for this Saturday’s Piranhaconda, premiering at 9pm ET/PT, the latest in Syfy’s four straight weeks of June original movie premieres (following last week’s Jersey Shore Shark Attack). It was pretty hilarious (even more so than usual for a movie of this sort) to watch the attack scenes when I had to use my imagination in many instances to see what sort of damage the title creature would […]

7 Questions With … Christopher Heyerdahl of HBO’s “True Blood”

Tall, lanky and foreboding, Christopher Heyerdahl cuts an indomitable presence onscreen. He’s become part of several TV shows and films with devoted followings, including The Twlight Saga, where he plays Marcus, a member of the ruling Volturi; Stargate Atlantis, during which he was covered in makeup to portray Todd the Wraith; Sanctuary, also a heavy makeup gig, as Bigfoot; the demon Alastair on Supernatural; and he’s more down-to-Earth, but no less frightening, as The Swede on AMC’s Hell on Wheels. But even he might be surprised at the level of fandom that comes from being on HBO’s vampire hit True Blood. […]

Sure, waiting sucks, but what about “True Blood”?

Season 5 is the time when a lot of shows really start to show their age. The cast gets blonder, tanner and much more fit, virtually unrecognizable from how they looked when the show started. You know, back when they were struggling actors hoping for their big break, instead of pop-culture rock stars who are by now so over it all. Has True Blood reached that point? I wasn’t alone, I’m sure, when I started to see trouble signs with the problematic Season 4. The show seemed to be collapsing under the weight of its own expectations for being outrageous. […]

Tony Sirico talks “Jersey Shore Shark Attack”

He’s a lifelong Brooklynite and longtime actor most famous for his role as “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri on The Sopranos, but Tony Sirico heads to the Jersey Shore for his latest role in Syfy’s original movie Jersey Shore Shark Attack, premiering this Saturday, June 9, at 9pm ET/PT. When I ask the New Yorker if any of his buddies razzed him for playing a Jersey guy, the actor laughs. “Nah. The only time I get razzed — and then, it’s a good razz — is from the fans I got. If I may say so, I say ‘hello’ to about a […]
