Petals on the Wind: V.C. Andrews series blooms with “Attic” follow-up

In January, Lifetime’s film adaptation of the V.C. Andrews cult classic novel Flowers in the Attic lured a whopping 6.1 million viewers to its controversial tale of multigenerational family horrors, brought to vivid life by Ellen Burstyn, Heather Graham and Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka. Almost immediately, production began on the film’s sequel, Petals on the Wind. Tweaking that novel’s timeline, Petals — which premieres on Memorial Day — begins 10 years after tormented Dollanganger siblings Christopher, Cathy and Carrie escaped their attic prison and the torment at the hands of their mother Corrine (Graham) and grandmother Olivia (Burstyn). Now grown, […]

Interview: Josh Hartnett on Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful”

An overall sense of mystery has pervaded Showtime’s new psychological horror series Penny Dreadful, premiering Sunday, and that is probably fitting. The eight-episode Victorian-era series is set in 1891 London and focuses on some of the scariest characters in literature, including Dracula, Dorian Gray, and Dr. Frankenstein and his creature. Bringing the gruesomeness and horror to life is an eclectic cast that includes Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. The show is created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator), and also executive produced by Sam Mendes (Skyfall). “As the show sort of settles […]

Janet Montgomery on “Salem,” Mary Sibley, mice and Margaret Thatcher

British actress Janet Montgomery has dabbled in a number of American TV series, from FOX’s Human Target to CBS’ Made in Jersey, but nothing has come even close to her newest role as Mary Sibley in WGN America’s Salem. “I do know when I read the scripts it definitely gives me the chills and sometimes I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that seems so risqué,’” Montgomery says of Salem, which airs on Sundays at 10pm ET beginning April 20. The series is set in 17th-century Salem at the height of the Salem witch trials, and follows Montgomery’s character Mary Sibley and […]

Preview of “Salem” on WGN: Sex, nudity and Janet Montgomery as one wicked witch

When it comes to TV’s portrayal of witches, American Horror Story: Coven had its moments, but the newest entry in the genre — Salem — takes a more disturbingly realistic approach to the topic.  The Season 1 premiere of Salem on WGN America (Sunday, April 20 at 10pm ET/9pm CT) takes little time to embark on a wildly wicked and provocatively dark telling of how the 17th-century Salem witch trials actually came to be. And, let’s just say, it wasn’t pretty. TV vets Brannon Braga (writer on series like 24 and Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Adam Simon (The […]

Animal Planet’s Monster Week 2014 to include a Shannen Doherty horror film

Animal Planet has gotten some flak in recent years for its “mockumentaries” about mermaids, which have been presented in a realistic format, albeit with quick disclaimers at the end indicating that they were more speculative than anything. For the network’s Monster Week 2014, Animal Planet can’t really be criticized in that regard for its new production Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys, which an Animal Planet release plainly indicates is a “horror film” (but they also do call it a “marquee two-hour special”). To further let you know that this program should not be taken as scientific fact, it […]

“Sharknado” studio The Asylum to produce zombie series “Z Nation” for Syfy

Is there room on television for two series set in a post-zombie apocalypse landscape? Syfy and production company The Asylum (Sharknado) believe so. Today the network announced that this fall it will be debuting Z Nation, a 13-episode action-horror series depicting “the epic struggle to save humanity after a zombie apocalypse.” The series will be produced by The Asylum, with Karl Schaefer (Eureka, The Dead Zone) serving as executive producer and showrunner. From Syfy: “In Z Nation, three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known […]

The Walking Dead: Josh McDermitt on what’s ahead for Dr. Eugene Porter and Co.

With just two episodes left in The Walking Dead Season 4, we’re all on the march to Terminus, right? Er, right? Even if not all of us are exactly aware that that’s what we’re doing? And if it’s a good idea or not. Plus, we’ve got some new folks along for the ride. Dr. Eugene Porter, Sgt. Abraham Ford and Rosita Espinosa — the long-awaited fan favorites from The Walking Dead graphic novels — have swerved off their mission to get the mullet-noggined, trigger-happy Eugene to Washington, D.C., and are tagging along with Glenn and Tara at his insistence. And […]

“Sharknado 2” starts filming in February; Ian Ziering and Tara Reid to reprise roles

As if New York City hasn’t seen its share of craziness lately, with snowstorms and the influx of Super Bowl fans and media, the Big Apple will be bitten again soon, when Syfy begins filming its sequel to last year’s social-media hit Sharknado. The network announced that Sharknado 2: The Second One will begin filming in New York on Feb. 13. Sharknado stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid (pictured below in a scene from the first movie) will reprise their roles as Fin and April, Syfy also announced. Also returning for Sharknado 2 are director Anthony Ferrante and writer Thunder Levin. “Sharknado was […]

5 Things To Know About Season 2 of “The Following”

OK, first things first. So when does Season 2 of The Following premiere? A lot of confusion happened last week when FOX did some rejiggering of their schedule and added a “sneak preview,” which was more like the season premiere of The Following, which aired immediately after the NFC Championship game. Our DVRs weren’t prepared when post-game coverage stopped mid-hour and The Following immediately started resulting in many people missing the first 12 minutes. Not to worry. FOX always intended to re-air the episode as part of tonight’s two-hour premiere event. So here’s the lineup: The Following: “Resurrection” begins at […]

Interview: Billy Campbell of Syfy’s “Helix”

“I kind of think of this show as a mashup of The Andromeda Strain, John Carpenter’s The Thing and The Walking Dead,” Billy Campbell tells me of his new Syfy series Helix, premiering Jan. 10. Prior to the interview, watching the pilot, that is almost exactly what I thought about this 13-episode thriller (except, for me, parts of the show called to mind 28 Days Later more so than The Walking Dead). Helix does indeed combine classic sci-fi elements from those titles — a disease outbreak, a group of people at a fairly claustrophobic, remote Arctic outpost, and, eventually, at […]
