Fallen Star: Lifetime’s long-awaited Aaliyah biopic premieres Saturday

Aaliyah Haughton — better known as Aaliyah — was the multitalented Brooklyn native who paved the way for superstars like Beyoncé and Rihanna. By the time she boarded a chartered aircraft back to the U.S. after a 2001 Bahamian video shoot, the 22-year-old stunner was a platinum-selling recording artist beginning to make a splash in feature films. And when the dual-engine plane plummeted to the ground shortly after takeoff, killing everyone aboard, one of entertainment’s most promising stars was extinguished. Now Lifetime will chronicle Aaliyah’s journey — from her debut on Star Search at age 10 through the personal and […]

Scoring the Scene on “Criminal Minds”

CBS’ hit Criminal Minds is one of the creepiest dramas on television. For the past decade, the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit has matched wits with entertainment’s most twisted unsubs “unknown subjects.” As the team profiles and hunts down the depraved and despicable villains, the action is set against the most riveting soundtrack on television. The show’s award-winning composers, brothers Steffan and Marc Fantini (along with composing partner Scott Gordon), create the disturbing music that sets the show’s dark mood. Marc and Steffan, what is your background in music? Marc: Our musical background started in recording: rock, pop and songwriting. My […]

Saturday Night Live begins its 40th season on NBC this Saturday, Sept. 27, with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande (and former cast member Darrell Hammond taking over announcing duties from the late Don Pardo). The series premiered on Oct. 11, 1975, and since then has become a pop-culture staple, launching the careers of many now-famous comic actors. Several episodes of SNL have become famous themselves, either because of a notable host, a hilarious sketch, a prominent musical guest or a combination of all of the above. NBC is going to be airing what it considers “iconic” episodes […]

PBS special commemorates “The Star-Spangled Banner” bicentennial

The valiant defense of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 13, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The song eventually was declared the national anthem of the United States by Congress in 1931. In commemoration of 200 years of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” PBS will air a live, two-hour broadcast featuring various performances of patriotic tunes — including, of course, America’s national anthem. John Lithgow (pictured) hosts the event, held at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, and is joined by co-host Jordin Sparks. The concert, called […]
