NBC’s “The Sing-Off” spreads holiday cheer

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide One of greatest things about this time of year is when the sound of carolers fills the air, and fans of a cappella music will get a large dose of that tonight as NBC offers up a two-hour holiday special of The Sing-Off, called “A Sing-Off Christmas.” The competition crowned Pentatonix as its Season 3 winner last week, but that fortunately was not the end of the show’s run. Airing tonight at 8pm ET, this concert will feature groups from the first three seasons performing holiday and inspirational classics.

Country music takes center stage on PBS special “In Performance at the White House”

There are many perks to being the President of the United States, but perhaps none is cooler than being able to sit front row at concerts without having to leave your home. The Obamas will be front and center tonight when country music’s brightest stars gather at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for a special premiering Nov. 23 on PBS at 8pm ET. Airing as part of the In Performance at the White House series, the timing of this family event couldn’t be more perfect as it falls on Thanksgiving eve. Taking place in the East Room and hosted by President Obama […]

Kelly Clarkson goes unplugged in VH1 special

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide Some could argue that the first season of American Idol wasn’t as competitive as the the following years due to its then-obscurity, but nobody can claim that there has been a winner to date with a more powerful voice than inaugural champ Kelly Clarkson. Fans and skeptics alike can find out tonight (11pm ET) when the Texas native takes the stage in a VH1 Unplugged special. For those unfamiliar with the term, unplugged means a scaled-down, acoustic performance with no electric guitars, keyboards or over-amplification. It presents musicians and singers as they are, instead of […]

“The Last Play at Shea” brings music, baseball together

One of Billy Joel’s most famous songs is “New York State of Mind,” a sentiment that couldn’t possibly have been more fitting for the documentary The Last Play at Shea. Airing tonight on Showtime (9:30pm ET), The Last Play at Shea — narrated by Alec Baldwin — merges a nostalgic look at the historic stadium with live concert footage by Joel. The structure was demolished not too long after the documentary was filmed. Ask one New Yorker what Shea meant to them, and they will tell you that it was the home of the New York Mets. Ask another, and […]

NBC’s “The Sing-Off” is the best singing competition this season

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide If you want to watch a fun singing competition instead of Simon Cowell’s American Idol wannabe on FOX, I would highly suggest you tune in tonight to NBC’s under-the-radar The Sing-Off. Let me warn you first, though. You’re not going to get a high-end production like you do with Cowell’s The X-Factor, there isn’t an ounce of hype surrounding this show, and you surely won’t tune in more for the judges than you will the singers. If that’s your thing, then by all means The X-Factor is probably the better bet. But if you are […]

“Weird Al” Yankovic talks about his new Comedy Central concert

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Show of hands: Who thought the guy behind “Eat It” would still be making music — and arguably enjoying his biggest successes — nearly 30 years later? Somehow, some way “Weird Al” Yankovic has stayed relevant. Through Michael Jackson’s many personas, Madonna, grunge, nu-metal, hip hop and countless other genre shifts, he’s kept his jovial parodies — which occasionally have more bite than you might expect — coming. His latest album, Alpocalypse, which is spearheaded by the Lady Gaga goof “Perform This Way,” scored his highest-ever chart debut. He’s currently touring in support of the […]

The series debuts Friday, Oct. 14 and continues each Friday — except Dec. 9 — through Dec. 16, and features a variety of productions from all over the country. Appropriately, the hosts for each event were chosen for their special connections to either the productions or to the cities from which they originate. Rainn Wilson (The Office) starts things off Oct. 14 in the Twin Cities in a Gilbert and Sullivan sort of way with PBS Arts From Minnesota: […]
