World Series: Rocks & Sox On FOX

Sorry about the headline. You’ll see/hear that a billion freakin’ times before the series ends. The Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox play Game 1 of the World Series tonight at Fenway Park on FOX/FOX HD at 8:35pm ET. Should be a good series, with the Rockies on some freakish winning streak and the Red Sox coming off their usual ALCS comeback. Boston is probably the superior team, but the Rockies have silenced all the doubters before (and they have Jesus on their side). Part of us is pulling for the Rockies to finish the fairy tale and take some […]

More “E:60”: The Laker Girl, Baby Bullfighters, Ocho Cinco And A Deadly Bet

Features on tonight’s (Oct. 23 at 7pm ET) edition of ESPN’s E:60 newsmagazine series: The Laker Girl It’s not easy being Jeanie Buss. At age 46, Buss is juggling a set of complicated relationships while running business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. Buss’ father, Jerry, owns the Lakers but has handed day-to-day oversight to Jeanie and her brother Jim, who runs the basketball side of the club and could eventually compete with Jeanie for the top job. Jeanie is in a long-term relationship with the team’s head coach, Phil Jackson, whom her father once fired. As the 2007-08 NBA […]

NFL Network Gives You Total Access To The Season’s Worst Game

NFL Network is probably my favorite cable channel, but it seems it’s falling on hard times these days. Most big cable companies are still refusing to carry it, and it even rented away its best show, NFL Game of the Week, to ION (!) this season. And NFL Net couldn’t even catch a break this past weekend when it decided to make Sunday’s Ravens-49ers game — a miserable crapfest the Ravens won 9-7 — a special “Mic’d Up” game. NFL Net added 12 extra cameras to this game and put microphones on 10 players and coaches to bring us Ravens […]

MLB Playoffs On TBS

The MLB playoffs start today, and for the first time, TBS will have exclusive coverage of the Division Series. TBS also has coverage of the National League Championship Series, alternating between NLCS and ALCS with FOX for the next seven years. I’m curious to gauge public sentiment on how the TBS exclusive deal is going to mess with TV viewers who don’t have cable. There’s no over-the-air coverage of games on TBS, even for teams’ local markets. So imagine you’re a Cubs fan (hurts, I know) and they’re in the NLCS. You don’t have cable TV, so you’re going to […]

FSN’s Best Damn Sport Science Show Period

Is there any “hang” in Michael Jordan’s hang time? What is a bigger target: an elite NFL receiver or an elephant? Could you jump out of a second-story window without getting injured? (I’m going to find out right now.) Questions such as these that have gnawed at your soul will finally be answered as FSN premieres Sport Science Sunday, Sept. 30 at 9pm. This new series of one-hour shows looks to explain sports stuff with science stuff. (Will they also explain why jock stuff and nerd stuff shouldn’t mix?) Sport Science uses motion-capture technology, CGI, high-speed cameras and biomechanical sensors […]

FOX TV Dads Pick NFL Games

FOX got the dads from its “Wildest Shows on Earth” Sunday animated lineup to pick this weekend’s NFL games. Homer Simpson of, uh, The Simpsons, Hank Hill of King of the Hill, Peter Griffin of Family Guy and Stan Smith of American Dad all weigh in on this weekend’s slate. We’ll check back on Tuesday to see how they did. Just remember guys: When you participate in sports, it’s not whether you win or lose — it’s how drunk you get. I’ve always wondered who’s actually writing these interviews with cartoon characters. Do they get a writer from the show, […]

Brewers Vs. Cubs Spills Over Onto The Small Screen

With the division race in the National League Central still up for grabs, the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers are taking their rivalry to a new venue: television. You might remember that, back in June, four Brewers — shortstop J.J. Hardy, center fielder Bill Hall and pitchers Chris Capuano and Jeff Suppan — appeared in an episode of The Young and the Restless. (If you don’t remember, here it is. By the way, does she still think Chris Capuano is the “best left-handed pitcher in the entire league” at 5-12 with a 5.21 ERA?) Well, tomorrow, while his teammates take […]

Just How Hot Is Natalie Gulbis, Exactly?

On Sept. 19 at 10pm ET, GOLF CHANNEL brings back The Natalie Gulbis Show reality series for a six-episode third season. If you don’t already know, Gulbis is golf’s pin-up girl. She’s highly photogenic and has a magnetic personality, and has been at the forefront of the LPGA’s attempt to sex up the sport. We’re fine with that. If you’ve got looks to go with the golf skills, go ahead and flaunt it. Here’s a little preview of the season, and a few details from GOLF CHANNEL: Wednesday’s premiere episode will go behind the scenes with Natalie at all of […]

Pugilism Pay-Per-Postponement

Usually when we promote a Pay-Per-View boxing event in Channel Guide Magazine, we have an office pool to see who picks the date closest to when the fight gets canceled. (OK, we don’t. But we probably should.) Boxing’s highly anticipated fall schedule has gotten off to a rocky — no pun intended — start. First, the Sept. 15 Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo Mayorga PPV fight was scrapped when Vargas was found to have anemia. And last Friday, the Sept. 8 “Fireworks” card featuring Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez got dumped when Marquez developed an infection in a cut on […]
