Oprah goes out with messages of gratitude, hope

By Tom Comi For many people like me who weren’t loyal Oprah watchers, her farewell tour on the surface might have been about all of the A-list celebrities who sang her praises at a special gathering at Chicago’s United Center. For those who watched faithfully for the past 25 years, though, this send-off was much more about what she stood for as a person and how she used her international platform to make the world a better place. Nobody can discount the stars who came out in her honor in the shows that aired Monday and Tuesday. Tom Hanks, Will […]

The undisputed queen of the talk show circuit, Oprah Winfrey, wraps up 25 years of her eponymous The Oprah Winfrey Show on May 25 (check local listings) — that’s more than 3,700 episodes, one wagonload of fat, a book club, a couch-climbing Tom Cruise, a Dr. Oz., a Dr. Phil, 276 Pontiac G6s and God knows what else — appropriately enough on the 25th of the month. Oprah’s final week includes guest stars like Tom Hanks, Madonna, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Michael Jordan and many more. You can see the lineup for The Oprah Winfrey Show‘s last week […]

Reiser saves face with “Tonight Show” appearance

By Tom Comi Nothing can be more embarrassing to an actor than having a show canceled after only two episodes, and nobody knows that better than Paul Reiser, after the sitcom bearing his name was yanked off the air last week by NBC. In what could have been a salt-in-the wound moment Monday, Reiser was booked to appear on NBC’s The Tonight Show before The Paul Reiser Show was given the hook. But being the subtle comedian he is, Reiser turned the appearance into one of the funnier segments we have seen in a long time on late-night television.

Jon Cryer gets the last laugh

By Tom Comi There’s an old expression that if you can’t beat somebody then you should join them, and Jon Cryer did just that on Conan O’Brien’s show last night in a hilarious self-effacing monologue in which he admitted that he is indeed a troll. For those living under a rock, Cryer’s appearance was in response to comments made by his former Two and a Half Men co-star Charlies Sheen, who earlier this week said he is a troll for not coming to Sheen’s defense after getting fired. Conan introduced Cryer, who walked out and addressed the audience. “Those words […]

TMZ casts unwanted spotlight on celebrities

There was a time not too long ago when it was taboo to expose the negative aspects of Hollywood. Sure, the Enquirer and other tabloids covered the gossip angle, but most of them were usually dismissed for what they were. But the game has changed, and nobody can dispute that TMZ, through its TV show and website, has completely altered how celebrities are covered and ultimately perceived these days. If a singer, actor, director or anybody with a known name is arrested, TMZ is the first to know and report it; if a mug shot is taken, TMZ has it […]

Ted Williams: The ultimate reality TV story

Every once in a while life really does imitate art, and we needn’t look any further than Ted Williams — the homeless man with the golden voice — whose life is unfolding before our very eyes like Jim Carrey’s character in the movie The Truman Show. Fortunately for the fictional Truman Burbank, his story did have a happy ending. But many of us watch with bated breath to see how the Ted Williams fairy tale will end. Williams’ life has transpired like the realest of reality shows. He has gone from begging for money and work on an Ohio street corner […]

TV’s “The Doctors” talk H1N1 flu with CNN’s Sanjay Gupta

On Wednesday, October 28, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta joins former Bachelor Dr. Travis Stork and the rest of the crew on TV’s syndicated The Doctors to separate the facts from fiction about the H1N1 virus and vaccination. “This is an example of when doctors are the worst patients — I thought it was anything but H1N1 when I first got sick,” explains Dr. Gupta, who says he was shocked to learn that he contracted the swine flu while on assignment in Afghanistan. Dr. Gupta and The Doctors doctors also discuss why kids should be a priority when […]
