“The Writers’ Room”: Jim Rash tackles TV’s biggest series in Sundance Channel talk show

Television is often called a writer’s medium these days, but it’s rare that we actually get to see any writers onscreen. Sundance Channel and Jim Rash — along with Entertainment Weekly — are out to change that with The Writers’ Room. Taking the staffs of some of today’s hottest shows — Breaking Bad, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Parks and Recreation, American Horror Story and New Girl — the six-episode series puts them in a roundtable format (think Real Time with Bill Maher minus the politics) to give an in-depth, unfiltered look into how they make the choices they do, and […]

Keith Olbermann returning to ESPN2 in August

Keith Olbermann returns to ESPN with a late-night program, Olbermann, premiering Aug. 26 and airing weeknights on ESPN2 at 11pm ET. Upstaging the news that hell has frozen over is the official word from ESPN that Keith Olbermann is returning to the ESPN family with a late-night sports talk show Olbermann, premiering Monday, Aug. 26, and airing Mondays-Fridays at 11pm ET on ESPN2. Olbermann worked for ESPN from 1992-97, and their acrimonious parting was the stuff of legend (“He didn’t just burn bridges here. He napalmed them.”). After a number of gigs in between (including Current TV), it seems now […]

Comedy Bang Bang returns for Season 2 of inspired lunacy on IFC

Comedy Bang! Bang! Fridays beginning July 12 IFC, 10pm ET/PT Maybe it was the Ghoulies joke. I’ll admit to having largely missed out on the first season of Comedy Bang! Bang!, IFC’s free-form send-up of the talk-show genre. Then when I put in the screeners for two episodes of Season 2, with guest stars Andy Samberg and Aziz Ansari, I sat there for a while not too impressed, finding the endless stream of improvised gags feeling at times like a laborious outtake reel — you know, like those ones for Judd Apatow or Will Ferrell movies where you’re shocked at […]

“Carson on TCM” airs Johnny Carson’s vintage late-night interviews

Ending the day with a dose of Johnny Carson was an American tradition for nearly 30 years, as the King of Late Night seemingly perfected the art of the talk-show interview, and the format itself. Johnny’s been off the air since 1992, but audiences will get a chance to see him in action again this summer — albeit a little earlier in the day — with Carson on TCM. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, Carson on TCM will feature vintage interviews from The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson, many of which haven’t been seen in their entirety since their original air date. […]

“The Show With Vinny” gives “Jersey Shore” alum something to do

Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino hosts MTV’s The Show With Vinny (premiering Thursday, May 2, at 10pm ET/PT), a new conversational interview show from his family home in Staten Island, N.Y. With no studio or audience, celebrity guests enjoy hospitality with Guadagnino’s family and Italian cuisine prepared by his mother. When Jersey Shore ended, MTV promised/warned it wouldn’t be the last we’d see of Snooki, The Situation, et al. We’ve already been subjected to spinoffs Snooki & JWOWW and The Pauly D Project, neither of which garnered the same following as Jersey Shore, and MTV seems to be clutching at this […]
