TCA: critics indict mishandling of breaking news at ABC News panel

While there were a few gracious questions for Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts regarding her health and who might fill in when she undergoes a bone marrow transplant for myelodysplastic syndrome (Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Kelly Ripa, and the cast of The View have all reportedly volunteered), Thursday morning’s ABC News panel was largely an indictment of how news outlets handle breaking news. At the forefront of the discussion — with ABC News President Ben Sherwood on hand in person and the GMA crew looking on via satellite  — was correspondent Brian Ross’ confusing a Tea Party supporter named James Holmes with […]

TCA: Reporters go a little rogue following Sarah Palin’s NBC party appearance

Yesterday’s NBC day at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour ended with a cocktail party around the pool area of the Beverly Hilton, where the network gathered the stars of its new late summer/fall broadcast and cable series to mingle with reporters. While the guest list included the likes of Matthew Perry (of the new sitcom Go On); Anthony Anderson and Tempestt Bledsoe (the new sitcom Guys With Kids); Style Network’s Bill and Giuliana Rancic; Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells (the new Ryan Murphy sitcom The New Normal); and the stars of J.J. Abrams’ new drama Revolution, there […]

TCA: Even critics get misty-eyed in final “Fringe” panel

At an executive panel on Monday’s FOX day at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour, FOX Entertainment president Kevin Reilly addressed a question about his decision to let Fringe — which, while not a mega-hit like an American Idol, has a more-than-devoted fan base — go out with dignity in an upcoming final season, rather than just yanking it from the air. “I hoping this puts to bed the ‘ghost of Comic-Con’ sentiment,” Reilly expressed, “if you will, which is, ‘Damn you, FOX. You put these shows on and then break our hearts.’ I think, at least hopefully, we’ve […]

TCA: Mindy Kaling will return to “The Office” for season premiere

At the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour this morning to promote her new fall series The Mindy Project, premiering Sept. 25 on FOX, Mindy Kaling confirmed that she would be back on the season premiere episode of her former series, The Office, and maybe another episode. Kaling also said that her former boss, The Office executive producer Greg Daniels, would direct an episode of her new series. “Who’s the boss now?” the actress, who also co-executive produces The Mindy Project, joked. ________________________ ©2012 Fox Broadcasting Co. TCA: Dean Geyer and Jacob Artist join “Glee”

As FOX’s hit series Glee enters its fourth season this fall, it will be back to school for newcomers Dean Geyer (pictured bottom) and Jacob Artist (pictured top) as they join the show when it returns on a new night — Thursday, Sept. 13, at 9pm ET/PT. In the season premiere, Rachel (Lea Michele) lands in New York City to attend NYADA and meets Brody Weston (Geyer), a handsome upperclassman who shows an interest in her. Meanwhile, back at McKinley, Puck’s (Mark Salling) bad boy younger half-brother, Jake Puckerman (Artist), tries out for the glee club, but his attitude […]

TCA: “Downton Abbey” Season 3 panel wows critics

PBS had the spotlight on Day 1 of the Summer 2012 Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, and while the day offered plenty of fascinating glimpses of upcoming programming offerings — from the new British acquisition Call the Midwife to the return of Kenneth Branagh’s Wallander — the final panel of the day, as expected, proved to be, as the Brits might say, the real “cracker.” It was the session for the upcoming American premiere on PBS of Season 3 of the smash hit Downton Abbey, which premieres in the States on Jan. […]

Shonda Rhimes trades stethoscopes for “Scandal”

Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice creator Shonda Rhimes says she wasn’t interested in tackling another show when Grey’s executive producer Betsy Beers approached her with a new idea. “[But Beers] kept telling me, ‘You need to meet a woman named Judy Smith,’” Rhimes told critics assembled for Day 2 of ABC’s TCA Winter Press Tour sessions. Turns out Smith is the founder and president of Impact Strategies, a crisis communications firm. That’s “fixer,” for short — the kind of person that high-profile folks hire to make their missteps and faux pas go away. Smith’s case load spans the Iran-Contra affair […]

TCA News: FX marks 2011 as best year, announces premiere dates for Justified, Anger Management, Archer

FX’s mix of drama, horror and comedy — Justified, American Horror Story and Wilfred — along with their returning series made 2011 a landmark year. The network grew their audience by double digits in almost all age groups. “Let me repeat that,” FX president John Landgraf (pictured) said. “All of our returning series grew in every adult demo and in total viewers:  male, female, young, old, every category.” Although Landgraf candidly shared “everything we do is a role of the dice, and sometimes it comes up the number you want, sometimes it doesn’t,” no one would argue that the network […]

TCA recap: TNT’s “Dallas” – Hagman, Duffy and Gray all return

TNT exec Michael Wright began yesterday’s TCA session for it’s upcoming revival of the beloved ’80s series Dallas by gently taking journos to task over the words we’ve been using to describe it. “Dallas is not a remake,” he said. “It is not a reboot. It is a continuation of the story of the Ewings.” Those of us who’ve seen the pilot would be hard-pressed to argue. In the first episode alone, original Dallas alum Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray (“The Big Three,” all regulars on the new series),  plus Charlene Tilton and Steve Kanaly were all present. […]

Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony talk “Q’Viva! The Chosen” at TCA

Since October 2011, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Jamie King have been traveling throughout the Americas in search of the most outstanding singers, musicians, dancers and amazing artists to be part of their passion project — ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen — which is set to debut on Univision Jan. 28 at 7pm ET/PT. The outcome of their search is a celebration of Latino culture, where the best artists are being brought back to the U.S. for a chance to be part of a live show that the network says will be the “greatest celebration of Latin music and performance.” Lopez, Anothny […]
