TCA: Betty White is off the hook in “Off Their Rockers” panel

While on Thursday night, PBS ended its Television Critics Association (TCA) 2012 Winter Press Tour presentations with a performance from 85-year-old Tony Bennett, NBC Universal kicked off its two days of panels on Friday with soon-to-be-90-year-old comedy legend Betty White. “He’s a kid,” White joked when told about Bennett. White talked a little about a 90th birthday tribute called Betty White’s 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America’s Golden Girl, that NBC will be taping with her and several guests — including Ellen DeGeneres, Morgan Freeman, Tina Fey, Ray Romano, Seth Meyers and Tracy Morgan, along with several of her costars […]

NBC’s Greenblatt: “Community has not been canceled”

At today’s NBC executive session at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour, Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, put to rest the fears of Community fans when he stated that the show “has not been canceled. It will definitely be back later in the spring.” He expressed regret for not explicitly stating that the show would return when the midseason announcement was released. But although the comedy series will “not quietly disappear,” Greenblatt admits that a fourth season of the show is “a really hard question to answer at this point” and that a decision on that would […]

TCA Winter Press Tour: Benedict Cumberbatch talks “Sherlock”; doesn’t talk “Star Trek”

On Day 2 of PBS’ presentations at the Television Critics Association (TCA) 2012 Winter Press Tour, Masterpiece presented the good news that America would be seeing Sherlock, Series II, Sundays May 6-20. Reprising their roles as Holmes and Watson are Benedict Cumberbatch (on fire lately with War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), with Lara Pulver (pictured left) introduced as the mysterious Irene Adler — who becomes an intriguing mental match for Holmes, and possible emotional interest, as well. The preview we saw looked awesome, and should satisfy fans of the first season (don’t worry; […]

Favorite moments from Day 1 of TCA Winter Press Tour

PBS kicked off the 2012 Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour with a nice mix of information and entertainment. Here are my favorite moments from Day 1: 1. The B-52’s concert — Even as they celebrate their 35th anniversary as a band this year, the Athens, Ga., band is looking and sounding as great as ever (Kate Pierson especially has still got it going on). Performing for the critics in support of their March PBS special The B-52’s With the Wild Crowd!, the group rocked about an hour’s worth of old and new hits (even compelling several critics to […]

TCA Winter Press Tour 2012, Day 1: PBS

Day 1 of the 2012 Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour marked the first time that I personally have covered the PBS portion of the tour, and like the network itself, the day was an eclectic mix of entertainment and information, featuring everything from a cabaret performance by Michael Feinstein to cupcakes with The Cat in the Hat to a concert by The B-52’s. During the morning executive session, Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, announced a few upcoming specials and series. Of note (or possible concern, depending upon your outlook, given the slippery slope that such series […]

TCA Summer Press Tour: FOX Party at the Beach

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP After yesterday’s FOX panels (more on them in a later post), FOX shuttled us out to the coast to Gladstones in Malibu for their All-Star party. Located where Santa Monica Boulevard meets the Pacific Coast Highway, Gladstones is situated on prime real estate — beachfront, on the Pacific. My shuttle arrived in time to see a spectacular sunset lending a cool glow to the establishment, the rocks along the coast, the surfers catching waves and the pelicans diving for their dinner. The smell of saltwater was in the air, and a nice, cool breeze came […]

TCA Summer Press Tour: Torture, Witches, H8Rs, Love Labs and more

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Thursday was my first full day at the TCA press tour,  and the sessions ran the gamut with mostly interesting, and sometimes odd, panels of Showtime and CW programs. Things kicked off with Damian Lewis talking about getting peed on a few days ago, and finished up with talk of Dr. Drew’s Love Lab, if that gives you any indication of the day. “Homeland” Security The first panel was for Showtime’s new drama series Homeland, which looks really good. Stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Morena Baccarin were here to discuss it, along with executive […]

Showtime debuts “Homeland” trailer

This morning at the TCA press tour Showtime premiered a new promotional trailer for its cool-looking new drama series Homeland, which premieres Oct. 2 (following the season premiere of Dexter) and stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin and Mandy Patinkin. Danes plays a CIA officer who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of a U.S. soldier (Lewis) who had been missing and presumed dead was a set-up and may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. Howard Gordon (24) is an executive producer.
