#TCA16: Zach Galifianakis is a rodeo clown? We’re sold!

Zach Galifianakis is a rodeo clown. Need we go on? In the new FX new single-camera comedy Baskets (premieres Thursday, Jan. 21, at 10pm ET/PT), Galifianakis plays Chip Baskets, a man with a dream of becoming the world’s most celebrated circus clown. Inspired by the famous European circus performers of the 1800s, Chip attends a prestigious clowning school in Paris. But the Parisian clown scene proves too costly — the upscale French clown-nose boutiques are pricey — and Chip is forced to leave the school. He returns to Bakersfield, Calif., where he lives in an extended stay hotel while looking for […]

#TCA16: Tyler Perry talks #OscarsSoWhite controversy

Tyler Perry was at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press tour on FOX day today, to discuss his role as host and narrator for the upcoming spring music event The Passion — a telling of the final days of Jesus as set to modern music, inspired by a hugely successful Dutch event. After the panel, Perry talked to a scrum of reporters and addressed one question about the controversy of no person of color being nominated for an acting Oscar this year. The Academy has historically been seen as slighting minority actors, and in recent years that has inspired the sarcastic […]

#TCA16: No Jack Bauer in new “24” event series, “diverse” lead sought

FOX’s executive session this morning drove home that the network is in on event series based on successful former series on the network. Coming up soon is the 6-part revisiting of The X-Files, and it was announced that there is also a Prison Break event series in the works. Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, also announced that FOX has greenlit a pilot for a new series set in the world of 24. However, this event series — unlike the original 24 and a previous event series, 24: Live Another Day — will not star Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, and will […]

#TCA16: FOX’s “Lucifer” should be cast down to … well, you know

FOX’s new supernatural crime drama Lucifer (premieres Monday, Jan. 25, at 9pm ET/PT) feels like Castle if Richard Castle were the Prince of Darkness. Tom Ellis stars as Lucifer Morningstar — yes, Satan himself — who has grown bored reigning over Hell and is on holiday in a much more exciting place: Los Angeles. Lucifer is a tall, dark and handsome Brit who owns a nightclub called Lux, drives around in a high-end convertible (license plate FALL1N1) and gets people to reveal their forbidden desires. It’s all fun and games for Lucifer until a faded pop star whose career he helped launch is […]

#TCA16: FOX announces “24: Legacy” pilot, “Prison Break” event

FOX made several programming announcements Friday at the 2016 TCA Winter Press Tour: FOX has ordered the pilot for 24: Legacy, featuring a new cast of characters (no Jack Bauer, sorry) but retaining the style and format with each episode representing one hour of a day. According to the FOX announcement, the story will “revolve around a military hero’s return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back – compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.” Stephen Hopkins will direct […]

Patrick Warburton on The Tick revival: “I have to do it soon”

I talked with Patrick Warburton today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour about his new NBC sitcom Crowded (more on that in a later post), and had a chance to also talk about his other memorable comedic work, from David Puddy on Seinfeld to Joe Swanson on Family Guy to Brock Samson on The Venture Bros. (Season 6 of The Venture Bros. premieres Jan. 31 on Adult Swim). But Warburton said that while all of those certainly have their fan bases, it is his short-lived 2001 FOX sitcom The Tick that “has this grand cult following.” Our interview was at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, and Warburton said […]

#TCA16: Another #OneChicago crossover coming in February

Dick Wolf, legendary executive producer of the Law & Order franchise and the recent wave of shows in the Chicago franchise — Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med — was at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour today to talk about the Chicago shows in the wake of a successful crossover among his series last week. “The crossover last week was so incredibly satisfying,” Wolf told reporters, “because I think we got new eyeballs to all three shows. Whether they’ll stay around, I don’t know, but in the two nights, the four shows, including SVU, hit on an L3 basis 49.26 million people. I don’t want to […]

#TCA16: Stop asking NBC about Donald Trump already!

The days of NBC executives having to answer questions about its association with Bill Cosby are over. The days of NBC having to respond to inquiries about its relationship with Donald Trump have arrived. NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, President Jennifer Salke and alternative and late-night programming president Paul Telegdy defended the network dropping Trump from The Apprentice and severing ties with Trump’s pageant specials and then signing Trump to host Saturday Night Live in November. NBC execs admitted they didn’t expect Trump’s presidential candidacy to have legs, and that Trump’s brief screen time on SNL is dwarfed by the […]
