Sally Pressman Enlists For Another Season Of “Army Wives”

It was a no-brainer that Lifetime‘s series Army Wives would be back for another season. Not simply because it ended on a cliffhanger (networks have been known to leave viewers hanging by yanking shows before storylines are completed if the program’s ratings are low), but because the all-important viewing numbers were more than there. Season 1 was one of last summer’s hit shows, with the season finale becoming Lifetime’s most-watched original series telecast ever. And the cliffhanger should certainly help bring all of those viewers back for more. Last season ended with a bombing at the Hump Bar, a watering […]

Adventurous Producer Thom Beers Strikes “Black Gold”

Thom Beers believes he has struck another goldmine. The creator/producer of such hits as Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, Monster Garage and Ax Men — just to name a few — will unearth his latest find when Black Gold premieres June 18 on truTV. Following the adventures of oil drillers, known as “roughnecks,” who put their lives on the line to capture the bubbling crude, the show continues Beers’ fascination with the world’s most dangerous jobs. Whether it’s on the high seas or in the arid badlands of West Texas, Beers says the key is finding the right people to […]

A Look At NASA’s Decade Of “Wow!”

And what if they hadn’t come back from the moon? When Neil Armstrong made his “one giant leap for mankind” in the summer of 1969, the world cheered — little knowing that it was less certain he would ever walk on Earth again. The most telling evidence of how dangerous that original moon landing was is found in a memo from then White House speechwriter William Safire. Titled “In Event of Moon Disaster,” the short speech was prepared so that President Nixon would be ready in case the mission went wrong and the men could not return. It says, in […]

Swingtown: Longing, Shame and that Rosy Perfection recipe

By Elaine B Can we return to a more innocent life after innocence is lost? Can we, as Quentin Crisp asserted, reclaim our virginity through rigorous practice of prudishness? Susan, still reeling from her discovery of lawyer Sylvia’s business card in her husband’s pocket, certainly tries. First, she has a surprised Bruce say prayers at Sunday breakfast. Then she hustles everyone to church to hopefully give Bruce a dose of good old religious guilt. They see Janet and family there, and Susan asks Janet to help her organize a housewarming party. Janet, in her element, hits the recipe books while […]

7 Questions With...

8 Questions With … Bill Engvall

1. What has been your strangest fan encounter? Bill Engvall: In the Charlotte airport … it’s early in the morning, I’m half asleep, walking through the airport, and this guy walks up to me and — not slugs me — but hits me in the shoulder, and goes, “Hey, man,” and it just scared me so much. I thought, “What’s this guy going to do, is he going to bite me?” And he goes, “I think you’re hysterical and I watch your show on TBS! It’s awesome!” 2. You’re at a magazine rack and can pick three magazines. What are […]

Dissecting Rambo: David Morrell Discusses The Icon He Created

Novelist David Morrell looks not one bit like a pumped-up, anger-fuelled, out-of-control one-man-force of lethal destruction, but he does know a thing or two about that — having created the character John Rambo in his novel First Blood, and in the novelizations of the subsequent films in the popular franchise. I first met Morrell at Chicon V, the 1991 World Science Fiction Convention. We were sitting next to each other at a mass book signing. As we waited for the doors to open, we discussed, among other things, how the incredible shades of gray in his novel First Blood shifted […]

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Not worth watching?

By Elaine B Recently, I commented that Swingtown would be so much better if it were on Showtime. Now I am not so sure. Tuning in to my DVR’d premiere of Billie Piper trying to be sexy, I found myself longing for Elizabeth Berkley in the smarmier and far more entertaining Razzie award-winning film Showgirls. What’s wrong with Call Girl? Well, almost everything. First off, in spite of her perky voice-over narration (the best thing about the premiere), Belle is … Not. Very. Nice.

Nashville Star: Week Two Recap

Posted by Mike Unlike Charley Jenkins, who was voted off by the judges last week, we’re back for Week 2. At the end of tonight’s show, another act will be joining Charley in the also-ran pool. Will it be his partner from last week’s Bottom 2, Alyson Gilbert? We can only hope. But first we’ll see performances by all 11 artists (as well as Trace Adkins), who have been divided into three groups and been assigned a mentor for the remainder of the competition. Jewel will help the men, John Rich will take care of the women, and Jeffrey Steele […]
