TCA: NBC closes three-year producing deal with Amy Poehler

A few weeks ago, as bitter Arctic cold entered much of the U.S. under the name “polar vortex,” the Internet had a bit of fun with a meme that made the rounds, featuring a picture of Amy Poehler superimposed on a map of the country, with the caption: “Poehler Vortex.” But, unlike the polar vortex, the Poehler Vortex is here to stay, and has really been felt in recent weeks, during which time Amy Poehler won her first Golden Globe for Best Actress, Musical or Comedy Series (in a ceremony that she very successfully again co-hosted with Tina Fey). Poehler […]

TCA: NBC’s next live musical event will be “Peter Pan”

Following the great success of its The Sound of Music Live!, starring Carrie Underwood, back in December (which brought nearly 19 million viewers to its live broadcast on Dec. 5), NBC announced today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour that it will be producing another live musical for television. On Dec. 4 of this year, the network will air Peter Pan Live! Peter Pan has a long, live TV history, on NBC specifically, dating back to 1955, when the Jerome Robbins-directed-and-choreographed musical was adapted for television (pictured left). That version notably starred Mary Martin as Peter Pan, […]

Method Man talks “Chozen” role, and why people sometimes call him Cliff Smith

In his latest project, Method Man is playing a familiar role, that of a rapper. And he’s happy to be doing it, making an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour this week to promote (and sometimes defend) FX’s controversial animated series Chozen — airing at 10:30pm Mondays — though he’s not a regular cast member. He gives voice to Phantasm, the duplicitous MC who framed the lead character for multiple criminal violations that sent Chozen (Bobby Moynihan) to prison for 10 years. But the former Wu-Tang Clan member, who has nabbed roles in projects as varied as The […]

TCA: Sirens sneak peek

Sirens could be called the inverse of Rescue Me. Instead of a heavy, dramatic show with unexpected moments of comedy, Sirens will focus on laughs but contain occasional “emotional jolts,” according to Denis Leary, who starred in Rescue Me and is executive producer on Sirens, which premieres at 10pm Thursday, March 6, on USA Network. Here is a sneak peek at Sirens:

TCA: “Resurrection” brings haunting drama to ABC

Do we question miracles, or just enjoy them? That’s one of the central questions behind the intriguing, heartfelt drama Resurrection, which premieres at 9pm Sunday, March 9. The cast and crew spoke with reporters Friday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif. Set in the small town of Arcadia, Mo., a husband and wife (Kurtwood Smith, Frances Fisher) are stunned when a young boy comes to their house and appears to be Jacob (Landon Giminez), their son who died decades ago. The mother accepts this without question, just delirious to have her son back, while the father […]

“The 100” brings futuristic take on “Lord of the Flies” to The CW

If you notice some similarities between the classic novel Lord of the Flies and The CW’s futuristic new drama The 100, that’s no accident. Like William Golding’s chilling masterpiece, the sci-fi series follows a group of young people left alone in a dangerous wilderness, and observes the deadly developments that take place as they struggle to not only survive the elements but each other. In The 100 (pronounced “The Hundred” if you want to sound cool about it) Earth has been left uninhabitable by nuclear war, with the remnants of humanity waiting out the century or so needed for the […]

TCA: “How I Met Your Mother” reflects on 9-year run

Back in 2005, CBS unveiled a rather unassuming pilot, with a unique concept. How I Met Your Mother was set in the future, with the main character telling his two teenage children the story of their parents’ romance. Nine improbable seasons later, Ted Mosby’s matrimonial odyssey is about to reach its conclusion, and the cast and creators shared some of their fondest memories with reporters Wednesday night. Sitting at the studio they’ve called home for nine years, actors Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders — all of whom have seen their stars rise during […]
