Man of Steel review: Mind-numbing action scenes sink Superman reboot

Despite being the prototypical superhero, Superman hasn’t often translated well to film. Yeah, we can all agree that Richard Donner’s Superman pretty much invented the modern comic-book movie, and Superman II was a fine follow-up. But since then it’s been pretty much 30-some years of cinematic futility. Superman III was an overstuffed mess, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace was a chintzy dud that killed the franchise for almost 20 years until Bryan Singer’s reverent-to-a-fault 2006 reboot Superman Returns amounted to a nice try, no thanks attempt. So hopes were high that a fresh approach with a fresh director would […]

7 Questions With Sherri Saum of ABC Family’s “The Fosters”

In its second week, ABC Family’s hot-button drama The Fosters saw a surge in viewership, leading some to ponder whether the controversy surrounding the show was a factor in drawing more eyeballs. The well-reviewed drama about a mixed-race, lesbian couple heading up a family where they are raising one’s biological son, along with a pair of adopted Latino twins and now a troubled foster daughter, drew the ire of conservative groups like One Million Moms for its subject matter. This was no surprise to star Sherri Saum, who plays one of the moms on the show. I talked with her […]

MTV, VH1 and CMT to devote themselves to music again (for one day, at least)

Dance Moms Season 3 episode 20 recap: Living With the Fibbin’

Once again, Dance Moms nation, we have ourselves an episode that had a splendid opportunity to leave viewers with something positive and lovely for a badly needed change … and blew it resoundingly. We had support for patients and families living with cancer. The power of forgiveness (yes, I know Christi and Kelly aren’t really fighting, but still). The rewards of good sportsmanship and fair play. All shot to hell because whomever is in charge just had to manufacture some drama that makes one little girl seem what I’m virtually certain is unduly insufferable and another, once again — perpetually, […]
