Oscars 2013 winners: “Argo” takes home top prize

Oscars 2013 winners will always enjoy their triumphs, despite the fact that they’ll forever be associated with the year that Seth MacFarlane hosted. No, he didn’t turn it into “Family Guy goes to the Oscars,” per se — although those opening-monologue sketches did play like so many interminable Family Guy fantasy sequences — the usually confident MacFarlane often came off awkward and stilted. No matter what swagger you bring to the gig, you’ve got to be funny, and so often MacFarlane just wasn’t. But MacFarlane has promised to adapt his shtick to the appropriate level, which probably means somewhere between the comfort food of Billy Crystal and the awkward embarrassment of David Letterman. But hey, as long as […]

Seth MacFarlane trying not to worry about “ruthless bit of scrutiny” that comes with Oscars gig

Although my body was remaining somewhat on Central Time, getting up at 4am in Los Angeles yesterday was still a pretty unnatural sensation for me. It felt somewhat surreal as myself and a colleague, and a handful of other TCA critics, left our Pasadena hotel in the pre-dawn, shuttled along on empty L.A. freeways, headed toward our destination — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, where a 5:30am press conference was to announce the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards, which air live on ABC Feb. 24. There, the buzz of excitement made the early […]
