“Wilt 100” on NBA TV Friday

NBA TV celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game with a documentary special Wilt 100, airing Friday, March 2, at 7pm ET. On March 2, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pa. The 100-point plateau is a feat that has gone unmatched. There’s no video footage of the game, and there were only 4,000 spectators (though I’m sure you’ll find 25,000 who said they were there.) NBA legend and Chamberlain rival Bill Russell narrates the documentary, with long-told stories, new insights, and original […]

2012 NBA All-Star TV schedule

The 61st All-Star Game brings the NBA’s best to Orlando’s Amway Center for the annual East vs. West exhibition. The spectacle is essentially a nightmare for anyone who appreciates defense; the West beat the East 148-143 in last year’s game. (But seriously, who wants to see defense?) Despite the late start of the season due to the lockout, the NBA All-Star rosters were assembled after each team played only about 20 games. But still, you’ll find most of the game’s big names. And, yes, there’s even going to be a Jeremy Lin appearance. The Knicks’ sudden star will play in […]

Jeremy Lin and the Knicks on national TV

By now you’ve all heard about the New York Knicks’ Jeremy Lin and the “Linsanity” that’s hit America over the past week or so. But many have not actually seen Lin in action as the Knicks haven’t been on national TV since they played the Lakers last Friday (and some people in New York haven’t been able to see him). Interestingly, ESPN had originally scheduled Hornets at Knicks for Friday, Feb. 17 at 8pm ET, but then flexed that game out in favor of Dallas at Philadelphia. Oops. But the Knicks will get the national TV spotlight on Sunday, Feb. […]

ESPN’s Bracketbusters showcases potential NCAA Tournament Cinderellas

We’ve all had our NCAA Tournament pools shattered by some team we’ve underestimated simply because we never saw them play. Raise your hand if you had George Mason knocking off UConn in 2006, or Siena upending Vanderbilt in 2008, or Murray State toppling Vanderbilt in 2010, or VCU taking down Kansas last year. Those winning teams are all deemed mid-majors due to not playing in the BCS conferences, but the reality nowadays is there really isn’t a lot of distance between the power leagues (such as the ACC, Big East, SEC and Big 12) and the mid-majors from leagues like […]

Carrier Classic 11-11-11 college basketball game airs Friday on ESPN

By Ryan Berenz Follow @ChannelGuideRAB Here’s something you don’t see every day. On Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, at 7pm ET, ESPN airs a college basketball game between Michigan State and North Carolina — a rematch of the 2009 NCAA championship game — played on the deck of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson (the vessel that transported Osama bin Laden to burial at sea). It’s the Quicken Loans Carrier Classic 11-11-11, and even without all the novelty of being played on a warship, it’s a pretty decent game with the preseason No. 1 Tar Heels against the […]

HBO’s “Prayer for a Perfect Season” follows NJ high school hoops team

At most public high schools around the country, the basketball team merely provides entertainment and school spirit for students and people in the community. At some Catholic schools like St. Patrick in New Jersey, the stakes are much, much higher. Tonight on HBO (9pm ET), we get a behind-the-scenes look at those stakes thanks to acclaimed director Marc Levin’s documentary Prayer for a Perfect Season. Levin spent a year following the 2010-11 boys basketball team at the Elizabeth, NJ, school, which culminates in a thrilling showdown with rival St. Anthony of Jersey City. For those who don’t follow high school […]
