“Hey, Apple!” The Annoying Orange is coming to Cartoon Network

What started out as just another web video for Dane Boedigheimer back in 2009 has built him a mini-empire, which will soon include a half-hour series on Cartoon Network. The Annoying Orange, which debuts at 8:30pm June 11, will showcase the verbose fruit who delights in tormenting his fellow foodstuffs with his intrusive high-pitched greetings like “Hey! Hey, Apple!” It’s all profoundly silly, and Boedigheimer — better known by his online handle Daneboe — knows it. Expanding the quickie shorts into episodes that will consist of two 11-minute segments has been a surprisingly smooth process so far, he says. It […]

Hail, Brak! “Cartoon Planet” returns to Cartoon Network’s orbit

Cartoon Network is partying like it’s 1995-99 by bringing back one of its signature shows in a new setting. Cartoon Planet, which was an offshoot of the lovably bizarre Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, has been revived for Friday nights for an hourlong block during which it will introduce a selection of other Cartoon Network favorites. “You could get a Dexter’s Laboratory, you could get a Powerpuff Girls, plus a Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, plus a Dial M for Monkey,” says Stacy Isenhower, senior vice president of programming and scheduling for Cartoon Network (a.k.a. the lady in charge of […]

Cartoon Network gets real about trying to stop bullying in “Speak Up”

Cartoon Network is usually a place for kids to escape from the real world, letting them catch up with their favorite characters and fantastical adventures. But a new documentary airing this weekend takes on a tough issue many of them have to deal with every day — bullying. Speak Up, premiering commercial-free at 5:30pm Sunday with an encore at 8pm, features several kids talking about their time being bullied and some who are still going through it. They list all the names they have heard — fat, stupid, ugly, dumb, etc. — and one little girl mentions how she would […]

Cartoon Network series takes “Green Lantern” into a new dimension

After soaring onto movie screens this past summer, DC Comics superhero Green Lantern is preparing to defend another realm of entertainment when Green Lantern: The Animated Series premieres at 7pm Friday on Cartoon Network. Executive producer Bruce Timm, who was a major creative force behind both Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series, returns to helm these largely outer space-set tales following the adventures of Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton) and his fellow band of galactic defenders. His main companion is Kilowog, his old Lantern Corps drill sergeant, portrayed by voice-over stud Kevin Michael Richardson. Tom Kenny, best known […]

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars” Season 4 premiere gets wet and wild

One of the reasons we had to wait until the Star Wars prequels before we saw any underwater denizens of George Lucas’ universe on their home, um, terrain — aside from story considerations — may likely have been that the special effects technology simply didn’t exist during the original trilogy to effectively present such a world to viewers. And even when we finally did see one of these societies in the form of Jar-Jar Binks and his fellow Gungans in Episode I, it was for a few minutes. But the two-part Season 4 premiere of Star Wars: The Clone Wars […]

Neil Patrick Harris terrorizes Batman through song

And it will be legen — wait for it — dary, as the actor/song-and-dance man guest stars as Music Meister on the Oct. 23 episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold on Cartoon Network. While the show usually highlights an obscure, often downright silly villain from the Dark Knight’s 70-year career (Kite Man, anyone? How about Clock King?), Harris will play a wholly original character called Music Meister, who uses his booming, Broadway-ready voice to bring people under his spell. That would explain why you’ll see Aquaman slow-dancing with Gorilla Grodd. A soundtrack for “Mayhem of the Music Meister” […]
