Michigan at Notre Dame highlights weekend’s college football schedule

A rare night game in South Bend, Ind., has the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines (2-1) visiting the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0) on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7:30pm ET on NBC. Notre Dame has only hosted eight prime-time games, with three of those being against Michigan (most recently in 1990). Irish head coach Brian Kelly will try to improve on last year’s 8-5 record and get the Irish to a major bowl game. BTN Big Ten Network’s 2012 college football TV schedule begins Saturday, Sept. 1, with Miami (Ohio) at Ohio State in the debut game for new Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. The 2012 college football season kicks off Thursday, Aug. 30, on ESPN with a doubleheader featuring South Carolina at Vanderbilt followed by Washington State at BYU. In the opening weekend, ESPN platforms will air 46 games including matchups with 16 ranked teams. Paterno author Joe Posnanski talks with Bob Costas on NBC Sports Network’s Costas Tonight on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 9pm ET. Posnanski had access to former Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno for months before the child sex abuse scandal broke. Costas Tonight will also feature Costas’ Nov. 14, 2011, interview with Jerry Sandusky which aired on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams (excerpt below). The interview will air in its entirety, including never-before-seen footage.

Sometimes it’s very easy to dismiss a college football bowl game simply because of its name or when it’s played, but tonight’s Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl has the makings to be a very good contest. Being played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, this matchup (8pm ET on ESPN) features the Thundering Herd of Marshall against the Golden Panthers of Florida International University. Many casual sports fans probably knew little about the West Virginia-based school until the 2006 movie We Are Marshall documented the tragic 1970 plane crash that killed most of the team and coaches.
