10 Nerdiest Comic-Con Panels (That I Won’t Be Covering)

Later this week, I’ll be neck-deep in what is often called the Super Bowl of geekdom: Comic-Con 2010. An expected 125,000 rabid fans of all things pop culture will crowd the San Diego Convention Center eager to see glimpses of the movies, TV shows, video games and, yes, even comic books that will dominate the landscape … until it’s time for next year’s Con. Starting Wednesday, I’ll be posting daily blogs here and Twitter updates at @ChannelGuide and @ChannelGuideSRH detailing what I’m seeing. Some of the panels I’ll be hitting include AMC’s The Walking Dead, The Hub’s upcoming new cartoon […]

Comic-Con 2009: Glee, Heroes, Sanctuary, True Blood

By Stacey Harrison OK, so Heroes fans are scary. The 11-member panel (yes, Zachary Quinto and Hayden Panettiere were there) drew rabid response from the packed Indigo Ballroom in the Hilton Bayfront. Security was tight and more than one fan asked for a hug and/or autograph (a big no-no in Comic-Con Q&A rules). Not bad for a show that has supposedly fallen out of favor. But it had some competition. The panel right before it was for Glee, which FOX premiered last spring to an amazing reception. Buzz has been building for months about this quirky high-school set comedy that […]

Morgan Spurlock talks about his “Simpsons” doc

By Stacey Harrison Contrary to initial announcements (and its title), the documentary commemorating the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons will not be in 3-D or on ice. It will, however, be the latest project of provocateur filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who shot to fame with by chronicling his monthlong McDonald’s-only diet in Super Size Me and conducted other sociological experiments in the weekly FX show 30 Days. He was at Comic-Con in San Diego (where just a few Simpsons fans have been known to gather) over the weekend auditioning superfans and grand impersonators to take part in the project. Spurlock took […]

Comic-Con 2009: Don’t mess with Spartacus

By Stacey Harrison Today’s highlight was a sneak preview of the upcoming Starz gladiator epic, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Or, as you’ll see as we get closer to the January premiere date, the TV version of 300. In describing the sex and violence quotient, the moderator said, “It’s going to make Rome look like Full House.” Included on the panel were Lucy Lawless, who plays Lucretia, wife of Spartacus’ master; Erin Cummings, who plays Sura, Spartacus’ long-suffering wife; Peter Mensah — who was actually in 300, as the Persian messenger who gets kicked down that hole by Leonidas — plays […]

Comic-Con 2009: Kick-butt women, Bruce Campbell and dirt on “Dexter”

By Stacey Harrison As if the power of Twilight needed another demonstration, the line outside of Hall H this morning was insane. The 6,500-seat venue was housing Comic-Con’s biggest event, among those a presentation of new footage from New Moon, the second installment of the boffo teen-vamp saga. But that wasn’t until 1:45. This was just after 9, and we had to get so far back in line that we couldn’t even see the front of the convention center. Hell, the ocean was a lot closer. Since you don’t have to leave between sessions, it’s easy for people to arrive […]

Comic-Con 2009: Preview Night

By Stacey Harrison If you want to look like you know what you’re doing at Comic-Con, wear a collared shirt. That’s the only reason I can think of as to why no less than 10 people came up to ask me about the line I was standing in. Not the hundreds of people standing around me, the vast majority of whom were sporting comic-book-themed shirts and whose noses were buried in books or laptops. I thought maybe it was my position in line. I was situated in front of a pillar that jutted me out a bit from the crowd, […]

Comic-Con ’08: Take The New Knight Rider Out For A Spin

Posted by SH Speculation ran wild when a new “Knight Rider” movie aired on NBC earlier this year that it was actually a pilot for a new series. Well, that turned out to be true — the show premieres Sept. 24 — but the producers say to forget pretty much everything in that movie. There’s a new sheriff in town, executive producer Gary Scott Thompson, who knows his way around fast cars. He wrote the first two “Fast and the Furious” movies and wasted no time making this show his own. The lead, Mike Traceur (Jason Bruening), has a new […]

Comic-Con ’08: No Rest For Batman

Posted by SH Having the fastest movie ever to top $300 million isn’t enough for the Caped Crusader. He’ll be hitting both the small screen and the bookshelf this fall with incarnations far different than the blacker-than-black version currently in theaters. “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” comes to Cartoon Network on Nov. 14, and it will wear its love of nostalgia proudly on its brightly colored sleeve. Taking its name from a comic book that pairs Batman with a different superhero each issue, and almost always took him out of Gotham City, the series will bring to life many […]

Comic-Con ’08: TV on the “Fringe”

Posted by SH J.J. Abrams brought a sneak peek of his new offering, “Fringe,” which bows on FOX Sept. 9. The first scene is a plane in distress, but no worries, there is no deserted island on the horizons. Smoke monsters, maybe, but none was visible in the pilot. The plane manages to land, but not until everyone on board is turned into goo so that all that’s left is skeletons. It’s a harrowing sequence, assuring that the effects will be feature-film quality. Newcomer Anna Torv is among the FBI agents called to investigate, and things quickly become personal when […]

Comic-Con ’08: Dispatches from Geek Central

Posted by SH My first Comic-Con, and — to borrow a phrase from its patron saint — I’m now a true believer. An estimated 125,000 pop-culture devotees descended upon San Diego, and despite the prevailing pale skin tone of the crowd, the sun did not scare them away. This is indeed Sundance for fanboys (and, increasingly, fangirls), and Hollywood dares not stay away. Even Triumph the Insult Comic Dog can see it. He took his shots at the crowd, addressing them as “mouth-breathers,” among other things, but his overall point was, Geeks now rule Hollywood. The biggest buzz was created […]
