“E:60”: Michael Vick’s Dogs, Dwayne Goodrich, Alex Ovechkin And Kim Ng

By Ryan Pieces featured in the April 21 (7pm ET) edition of ESPN’s sports newsmagazine series E:60: The Vick Dogs — E:60 correspondent Tom Farrey explores the fate of the 49 pit bulls confiscated on the property of the suspended NFL quarterback, who is serving a 23-month prison sentence for dog fighting. E:60 cameras travel to an animal sanctuary in southern Utah where some of the fighting pit bulls are being rehabilitated, and into homes in California where many of the less abused pit bulls now live — in some cases with families that have small children. Former Dallas Cowboy […]

Where To Watch The Masters Golf Tournament

Everyone’s excited to see how Tiger Woods will fare at The Masters April 9-12, his first major tournament since winning the 2008 U.S. Open and rehabbing his knee. Me, I’m more interested in seeing all the other players (especially last year’s Masters champ Trevor Immelman) being asked how they feel about Tiger’s return. “Uh, it’s totally great that I’ll never win another tournament while he’s around.” Anyway, after having Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery scream at us for the last two weeks, listening to Jim Nantz chillaxing and waxing poetic among the azaleas at Augusta will be a pleasant change […]

NFL Preseason Schedule Features Insignificant Games Of Great Interest

The NFL released its national TV schedule for the 2009 preseason, and already there is great intrigue and compelling stories about poorly played games that don’t matter. The first game, the Hall of Fame game between the Bills and Titans, gives us our first look at Terrell Owens in a Bills uniform — unless a preseason game is not considered a mandatory team activity (and under Dick Jauron, this could be the case). Then there is a Super Bowl rematch that won’t be nearly as super when the Cardinals visit the Steelers Aug. 17, with ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser sure to […]

Childhood Obesity And The Krispy Kreme Challenge: Together At Last On ESPN

By Ryan Is this just coincidence, or are there other sinister forces at work in Bristol? My weekly e-mail from ESPN about its Enterprise Journalism features included two tasty nuggets. Sunday’s Outside the Lines (March 29 at 9am ET) is going to include Mark Fainaru-Wada’s story on childhood obesity: Outside the Lines will examine the link between childhood obesity and the de-emphasis on physical education in our schools. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that by 2010, 20% of American children will be considered obese. According to experts, this generation might be the first in recorded history not […]

President Obama’s Bracket Has … North Carolina!

By Ryan In an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz, President Barack Obama filled out his NCAA Tournament bracket and has North Carolina defeating Louisville in the finals. “Now, for the Tar Heels that are watching, I picked you all last year — you let me down,” Obama says. “This year, don’t embarrass me in front of the nation, all right? I’m counting on you. I still got those sneakers you guys gave me.” The interview will re-air Wednesday, March 18, during the 6pm and 11pm ET editions of SportsCenter. You can view the president’s entire bracket at ESPN’s Tournament […]

NCAA Men’s Tournament First Round Schedule

NCAA Men’s Tournament action officially tips off Tuesday night on ESPN (7:30pm ET) with the play-in game between Alabama State and Morehead State, a formality to determine who will get slaughtered by Louisville and Rick Pitino’s suit on Friday night. But the Big Dance is in full effect on Thursday at 12pm ET on CBS. The first-round games on Thursday and Friday are one of my favorite sports days of the year. Yeah, I’m stuck at the office, but not getting any work done is part of the whole tournament experience. (Just kidding. I’ll get work done … during timeouts.) […]

The rest of us are probably going to catch a few WBC games when it’s convenient, and this weekend should give plenty of opportunities as the tournament begins in earnest. The U.S. will play its first game on Saturday at 2pm ET against Canada in Toronto on ESPN. Here’s the full schedule of WBC action on ESPN, ESPN2 and MLB Network: 2009 World Baseball Classic Schedule All Times Eastern ROUND 1 Pool A (Tokyo Dome, […]

Beta Survey Says ESPN2 Beats ESPN In "Program Quality"

Posted by Cubicle QB Here’s a survey stat that boggles the mind, courtesy of the annual Beta Research Cable Subscriber study that examines the perceived value and quality of cable TV networks. Some of the results were expected: Discovery Channel, History and ESPN ranked as the top basic cable networks. But then there’s this from Multichannel News: Discovery also scored high on program quality, but not as high as The Disney Channel. Seventy-eight percent of respondents ranked programming quality highly for the kids channel, just nudging Discovery, which got a score of 77%, out of first position. ESPN2 outranked its […]
