FX’s “Unsupervised” finds humor in the children left behind

By Stacey Harrison There is a lot of talk about how today’s kids are too protected, hampered in their path to maturity by so-called helicopter parents who hover around every second of their precious little ones’ lives, making sure they never feel a moment’s discomfort and that they know they are special. The characters in Unsupervised are not those kids. The animated FX comedy, which premieres tonight at 10:30, follows the exploits of Gary and Joel, two best friends who must forge through adolescence and the snake pit that is high-school society almost completely without parental guidance. Yet despite their […]

Elmore Leonard talks about the return of “Justified” and his new Raylan Givens novel

By Stacey Harrison Just go ahead and call today Raylan Givens Day. The modern-day lawman with an Old West sense of justice isn’t only returning to TV screens tonight — as FX rolls out Season 3 of Justified at 10pm — he’s also back on the pages of Raylan, the new novel from Elmore Leonard. The crime fiction master introduced the character back in 1993’s Pronto, when Givens was just a neophyte U.S. marshal still prone to making mistakes. The character showed up again a couple years later in Riding the Rap, emerging from supporting role to a co-lead, and […]

Rockmond Dunbar is the new sheriff in town on “Sons of Anarchy”

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH One of the many bright spots on this season of Sons of Anarchy has been the addition of Rockmond Dunbar as Deputy Sheriff Eli Roosevelt, a cop determined to take down SAMCRO, but who is not willing to break his principles to do it. It’s left his character caught in the middle between the criminals he’s trying to bring to justice, and the ruthless methods used by a federal attorney (Ray McKinnon) that put making the case above — far above — personal integrity. Roosevelt is perfectly willing to go into SAMCRO’s clubhouse and bust […]

“The League” is every comedy snob’s dream come true

FX is the new destination for badass shows. Shows that are edgy and willing to take chances, and, most importantly, free of the PG handcuffs that tie up broadcast series. Sons of Anarchy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia… This is the network that thought a pot-smoking dude in a dog costume sounded just right. So, it makes total sense that FX’s wickedly crass comedy about fantasy football, The League (Thursdays at 10:30p), has found its feet – and a hugely devoted fanbase of hardcore comedy-philes. The series, which began its third season on Oct. 6, is enjoying its highest ratings […]

Burt Reynolds to play himself on new season of “Archer”

When Archer returns for its third season in January, FX’s outrageous animated spy romp will count iconic actor Burt Reynolds among its guest stars. But in a twist, Reynolds will not be playing a fictional super spy, but himself in an episode titled “The Man From Jupiter.” (It’s a nod to Reynolds’ hometown of Jupiter, Fla., not the giant gas planet.) Archer creator Adam Reed says in a release that the person most thrilled with the announcement is his show’s main character, Sterling Archer. “Archer constantly tries to imitate Burt and always raves about Burt’s movies and all-around awesomeness. So […]

Seth Rogen joins “The League” for Season 3 premiere

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH I can imagine the thought process when the producers of The League were looking to cast the guest role of a pornographer named Dirty Randy. One of them undoubtedly said, “Let’s get a Seth Rogen type.” To which another responded, “Well, why don’t we see if we can just get the man himself.” All’s well that ends well, as the Season 3 premiere — airing tonight at 10:30 on FX — features Rogen as a professional smut peddler who helps the gang pull a prank on the long-suffering Andre by secretly shooting a skin flick […]

Alexandra Breckenridge vamps it up on “American Horror Story”

If you watched last night’s premiere of American Horror Story, you no doubt noticed Alexandra Breckenridge. She doesn’t have all that many scenes, but she makes maximum use of every second of her screen time, donning a French maid outfit that she looks poured into, while relentlessly, and maliciously, seducing Dylan McDermott’s character. But for all the dark and lascivious behavior her character displays, Breckenridge was sunny and friendly when I talked to her recently about her role in the much-anticipated series, the latest from producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. As one personality of the “Moira” character, she is […]

The riotous FX comedy returns for its seventh go-round tonight at 10pm with an episode called “Frank’s Pretty Woman,” in which Frank (Danny DeVito) decides he wants to marry his longtime beck-and-call girl, a junkie whore named Roxy (Alanna Ubach).
