If there is anything predictable about the British Open, it’s that it will always be unpredictable. Whether it’s wind, rain, cold or a perfect storm of all three, it’s fair to say that the person holding the prestigious Claret Jug Sunday afternoon will have survived a gauntlet of obstacles. Golf’s unofficial “fifth major,” THE PLAYERS Championship, tees of today in northern Florida, meaning golfers are in for four days of angst and balls in the drink. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass boasts three of the most difficult finishing holes on the PGA Tour, including the infamous “Island Green” at 17. Golf’s first major tournament of the year, The Masters, returns to Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., as the top players in the game compete for the coveted green jacket and a place in golf history. Phil Mickelson won his third Masters title and fourth career major at last year’s tournament, beating Lee Westwood by three strokes.
