Don’t bet on an American to win the British Open

If there is anything predictable about the British Open, it’s that it will always be unpredictable. Whether it’s wind, rain, cold or a perfect storm of all three, it’s fair to say that the person holding the prestigious Claret Jug Sunday afternoon will have survived a gauntlet of obstacles. The 140th British Open — held at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England — runs for four days beginning Thursday. All TV coverage here in the States will be handled by ESPN. Unlike many tournaments, this one is not about the golfers who can bomb it the furthest off the tee. […]

U.S. Open humbles the best of the best

Weekend duffers and hackers always try in vain to emulate pro golfers when we take to the public links courses. And with good reason. These elite players can pull off shots with ease that most amateurs can only dream about. But the next four days will be different. As the best of the best converge on Congressional Country Club in Maryland for the U.S. Open, they will be tested like they have rarely been tested before. When all of the scores are tallied Sunday afternoon, the last man standing could be hovering around par or maybe a few strokes under […]

2011 U.S. Open golf tournament TV schedule

This year’s national championship heads to Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., where Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson hope for a title in the year’s second major. Tiger Woods withdrew due to a lingering injury in his left […]

Where to watch THE PLAYERS Championship golf tournament

Golf’s unofficial “fifth major,” THE PLAYERS Championship, tees of today in northern Florida, meaning golfers are in for four days of angst and balls in the drink. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass boasts three of the most difficult finishing holes on the PGA Tour, including the infamous “Island Green” at 17. At 137 yards, it’s a pitching wedge for the average pro, but with wind and an uneven landing area, it can make for more than a few triple bogeys. (Tiger Woods has withdrawn in the first round, citing injury.) GOLF CHANNEL and NBC have coverage of the tournament […]

Masters title and green jacket up for grabs

There was a time when any preview of the prestigious Masters golf tournament started and ended with Tiger Woods. And although he is always a threat to walk off with the green jacket, it’s surely not the given that it was for so many years. What Tiger’s recent skid has done, though, is make the sport a lot more exciting. When he was at his peak, it was almost a foregone conclusion that he was either going to win most of the majors or be in the hunt down the stretch. Now there are dozens of golfers who are capable […]

CBS and ESPN offer specials surrounding The Masters golf tournament

By Ryan Berenz (Twitter: @ChannelGuideRAB) For those who like their sports quiet and reverential, ESPN and CBS have some special documentaries complementing their coverage of The Masters golf tournament: Sport Science (ESPN) ESPN’s Sport Science features three golf-related segments airing throughout The Masters coverage. One segment will analyze the swings of golfers Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson, showing how their clubhead speeds contribute to 3,000 pounds of force on a golf ball. Another segment examines the 9th hole at Augusta’s Par 3 course, and why it may lend itself to more holes-in-one during the Masters Par 3 Contest. The third […]
